About Maria

I completed a B.S. in nutrition. I taught small groups and individual lessons in English, Sience and Reading.
I am very, calm and patient. My teaching style is dynamic and I always like to chack the understanding of the student.
The class format would be: introduction (this is when the student can suggest the topic, concerns and difficults); after I would go in detail explanation of the matter covered and provide examples and exercises for the student to practice; finally, we review all the new knowledge aquired and the students ask any question he/ she may have. Sometimes I like to give some assignments for the student to complete for next class.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a B.S. in nutrition. I had volunteered with people with different mental disabilities including ADD/ADHD teaching them catechesis for 7 months and for the past year I have coordinated and taught a program for people with special needs, some with ADD/ADHD, to eat healthy, cook and practice yoga. I have worked with students with the following disabilities: learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, autism, ADD/ADHD, speech and language disorders, and other health impairments. Through my experience I developed listening, patience and understanding skills that have helped me to better communicate and teach students with ADD/ADHD. I am knowledgeable of appropriate accommodations and modifications for children with ADD/ADHD, as well as common strengths and weaknesses.

I work with students to improve their academic skills, social skills, behaviors, and emotional well-being. I target their academic skills through lessons that involve drill and practice. I love interacting with people with disabilities including ADD/ADHD and helping them in what they need so that they are more involved in activities and studies. I am glad to be involved in the lives of people with ADD/ADHD. I would like to help people who suffer ADD/ADHD improve and better manage their symptoms.

I love interacting with people with disabilities including Aspergers and helping them in what they need to feel more involved in activities and studies. Bible Studies

I am very involved with the church. I am Catholic and religion always took a special part in my life. Bautism, Communion and Confirmation sacraments I have taken. Since I was 7 years old I studied at a Catholic School until I was 15 and moved to U.S.A.
In U.S.A. I was involved with Saint Augustine's church while I attended University of Florida. I went to Bble tudies classes, Spanish group, and social events. I also attended their 2 retreats and was accepted to be a leader for one of them the following time.
In Miami, currently I am involved with Our Lady of the Lakes Church. I attend the young adult group and assist with dynamics and talks at meetings as needed.
Being your bible study teacher would be my pleasure and I am sure thre is nobetter knowledge you can get than the bible. It will guide your life.

Cooking

Last year I started coordinating a "healthy choices" program to get healthier.
I have developed healthful recipes and I cook them at home for guests, they all like them!
Also, I completed a BS in Dietetics/ Nutrition, for which some food chemistry classes were required.
I love interacting with people and helping them feel confident and comfortable in the kitchen. I am glad to teach cooking classes programs and encourage everyone to cook healthy.

Dyslexia

I have volunteered and worked teaching and assisting teachers serving people that have different learning disabilities including dyslexia for about two years. Through my experience I have developed listening, patience and understanding; skills that have helped me to better communicate and teach students with dyslexia. Furthermore, I am knowledgeable of appropriate accommodations and modifications for children with dyslexia, as well as common strengths and weaknesses.
I work with students to improve their academic skills, social skills, behaviors, and emotional well-being. My lessons involve drill and practice, and explanations are short, with simple instructions.
I also students to transfer the skills learned into everyday tasks. Spelling and grammar is something that many students with dyslexia struggle and have benefited from proofreading procedures that involve checking for one element at a time, such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling, sentence structure, and organization. An strategy I found to be very effective with students also is to emphasize review of previous lessons which helps students connect new information with prior knowledge. Another element that I help students with is keeping track of due dates, activities, etc.
I adapt lessons according to each child's educational needs because each student is a whole person, complete with individual strengths and weaknesses. I know that dyslexics have many strengths: oral skills, comprehension, good visual spatial awareness/artistic abilities and I think that many dyslexic children could become talented and gifted members of our schools if teachers and tutors work not only with their specific areas of difficulty, but also with their specific areas of strengths from an early age. Some qualities that I cultivate in my tutoring style include being enthusiastic, engaging, and encouraging because I love tutoring students with dyslexia and helping them in what they need so that they can be more involved in extra-curricular activities and studies. Dyslexic children, like all children, thrive on challenges and success!
