I graduated from Michigan State University with a master's in industrial math. Before beginning graduate studies I worked in primary education in a bilingual school in Madrid, Spain. While completing my master, I was a lecturer for calculus courses and tutored for the university's Math Learning Center along with private students. Currently I work full-time as an analyst but after being in the classroom for four years, I'm finding it hard to completely step away from teaching. Although my experience has primarily been with students aged 16 and older and 5-8 year-olds, I can also tutor ages in between. I speak Spanish (Castilian) fluently and don't mind splitting time between subjects, working with ESL students, or tutoring a group (I have a three student limit if they're all under the age of eight however).

I prefer to meet or correspond with new students (and their parents in the case of minors) prior to the first session to determine the student's needs, discuss learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. I also ask that students or their parents keep me filled in on their progress and that they let me know what topics they're covering or need help with two days in advance to give me adequate time to prepare. This allows us to use the time efficiently and is in the student's interest as well.

During the week I'm available late afternoon and in the evening and on weekends my schedule is flexible. I can help with test prep in addition to statistics and math as high as multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and discrete math/proof techniques. Standardized test scores are as follows:

ACT: 33
SAT: 2240 (2400 scoring)
GRE Verbal Reasoning: 167
GRE Quantitative Reasoning: 166

Please feel free to contact me for if you have any questions or would like more information or references.

Actuarial Science,

Actuarial Science

I worked as an actuarial analyst for a P&C insurer for two years and passed exams P, FM, and IFM (formerly MFE). I have an MS in an applied math field and took grad courses in statistics, econometrics, and data mining that cover topics on exams through MAS-II.
Econometrics,

Econometrics

I have taken (and passed) the first year Ph.D. sequence of econometrics at Michigan State University as well as cross-sectional and panel data econometrics. My M.S. is in mathematics, a field that forms the foundation for econometrics.

R

R

I have a master in an interdisciplinary applied field (industrial math) that required me to take statistics courses for which R was necessary. I used R as an undergrad for a calculus-based probability and statistics sequence and I also use the language regularly for my full-time job as a modeler and analyst. I have background knowledge of computer science and object-oriented programming that gives me an edge over individuals who can only program in one language—I tend to think of general methods when coding and then determine what the best approach is in the particular language (e.g. R). Furthermore, my graduate degree gave me knowledge of some of the advanced statistical methods available in R packages and I can explain both theoretical (i.e. statistical) and applied (or computer science-related) aspects of R. Sample code is available upon request.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have an advanced degree in mathematics and tutored at Michigan State University's Math Learning Center while I was in grad school. I've tutored this subject there some and also tutored it occasionally while I was an undergraduate myself. It's one of my all-time favorite courses (it's a toss up between linear and "discrete" math, which covers combinatorics, proof techniques, and logic) and I find it easier to motivate students in this subject because it's relevant to so many different fields (Many of the concepts from linear algebra are used frequently in econometrics, numerical analysis, data mining, physics, and engineering).

Wonderful communicator

Victoria was a whiz in translating concepts in statistics that I found hard to grasp from my textbook (even though the textbook was already conversational). Her efficient and straightforward manner of describing things like standard deviations, regressions, and testing hypotheses were effective.

Extremely knowledgeable

Victoria is an excellent tutor, she has an superior understanding of math concepts, with a talent of explaining them in basic term to a novice like me. I am eager to continue my sessions with her , confident that I will pass my course while enjoying learning math again.
