About Courtney

I have taught 5th grade, 7th grade, college-level classes, and was a Principal for 7 years. I also used to manage the standardized testing program for a prominent Chicago private high school. I am a graduate of an east coast ivy league school, but have been in Chicago since grad school. Although I was a Principal, I am not mean!! I will work with you to achieve the academic goals you have. I love young people, including elementary, high school and college students. I have three children of my own (14, 7, and 4). My strengths are in Math, Writing, and strategic test-taking. I look forward to working with you. I have taught 5th grade, 7th grade, college-level classes, and was a Principal for 7 years. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I am intimately familiar with multiple-step equations, graphing, systems of equations, and all of the rules that are associated with algebra. What I have found is that some students become confused with the introduction on a single variable or multiple variables. My approach is to describe the role of variables in a way that makes algebra far less intimidating.

College Counseling

The college application process is the most exciting time for a high school student. When a student are guided and exposed to various options, wonderful opportunities present themselves. The college counseling process has many important steps, all of which are crucial to student success. The first step in this process, of course, is working with the student to identify their interests and goals. Once these interests and goals are identified, families can methodically sort the college brochures, based on whether they highly competitive, competitive, and "safety schools". In these troubled economic times, prospects for financial aid are an important consideration. For this reason, school endowment and scholarship prospects should be examined also. The college application itself can seem quite intimidating. The application process is rigorous, but as a college counselor, we would set a timetable for completion of each application. Application essays will be revised and re-revised, until they are strong and can "stand on their own". College applications are have increased at most colleges, so it is very important to be prepared and competitive. I am here to help you with any portion of the process!!!

Economics

My undergraduate major was Economics, but I fell in love with Economics when I took it during my entire senior year of high school. I am very comfortable with both Microeconomics (the actions of businesses and individuals) and Macroeconomics (an examination of the entire economy), having taught both subjects at a local two-year college. I help students to understand the subject using real-life examples, and I utilize graphs to make economics come to life.

ESL/ESOL

I am in the process of getting my second master's degree, and it is an MA in Applied Linguistics: ESL. I currently teach ESL at a local university, where my focus is reading, writing, and conversation. I have worked with students from China, Ecuador, India, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Mexico.

Sociology

I have a Master's degree in Social Work and a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics. I teach Social Work Research levels I II, and III at a university in my city, where I work full time. In short, I help students to structure research proposals all the time. Although I live in Hyde Park, I work near Skokie.

We love Courtney — Our 8 year old is in a CPS selective enrollment school and we found that the old way of doing math differs from the common core way of doing it. Courtney F. to the rescue. She is very professional and patient with our daughter. ...
