About Sarah

Hello! I am offering lessons in Latin and English. I am a certified teacher with 9 years of teaching experience in independent, alternative, and public schools.

I have a bachelor's degree from Duke University in English and Classical Languages and a master's degree in English Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have my Illinois Teacher Certification in both English and Latin.

For the past four years I have been teaching Latin (level I through AP) and American Literature (English II) at a CPS selective enrollment high school. I have fairly open availability this summer.

I live close to UIC, but I'm flexible with the meeting place. Please send me an email if you have any questions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

As a teacher for the past eight years, I have helped many students to improve their study skills. I talk with students about their strengths and weaknesses and how they learn best. From that information, I make suggestions and explicitly show students how to put various strategies into practice. For example, if a student has trouble learning English vocabulary words, I would suggest flashcards, cloze exercises, illustrations, synonyms, antonyms, and/or repetition exercises. Typically students also benefit from learning organizational and time management skills.

My son actually enjoys working with Sarah. She can quickly assess where he needs help and engages him in the learning. She is also super reliable and always on time. I highly recommend her.
