Before I received a Bachelors degree in music at Northwestern University, I was an accomplished pianist from the age of five. I began to be interested in singing in high school and was apparently good enough to land the leads in three of them. I also performed at another all boys academy in the area one year.
I began my professional opera career with Chicago Opera Theater the year I graduated NU. Since that time, I have performed with various companies in Chicago; and in 1998, I was chosen among over 100 singers to sing a role in Milan, Italy. During the period between 2000 and 2005, I taught voice lessons as a private contractor at New Trier High School (Winnetka) and Niles North (Skokie). I was responsible for organizing studio recitals in which I accompanied the students myself on the piano.
In 2005, I chose to complete a Masters degree in Psychology from National-Louis University and wrote my thesis on "Bullying in the Workplace." It was a subject that was close to home, not only from the testimonies of friends and acquaintances, but indeed, my own experience working in corporate for a year and a half to supplement my income while in school.
I became interested in teaching English as a second language when I housed an exchange student from France in 2004. Since that time, I completed 20 hours of in-person Practicum Training, student teaching and Class Lesson Planning activities at the TEFL Institute in Chicago. I am a committed and fully invested teacher who cares about my students and their goals in earnest. I have excellent references and am ready to jump in to the opportunities available to teach the English language to students of all ages. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience using Outlook, Word, Excel (intermediate level) all within the WindowsXP environment. I believe that once you have mastered one version of each of these programs, the ability to transfer knowledge to another becomes intuitive.
My background is primarily music. I started piano lessons at age five and later on, obtained a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University. I sang professionally in the realm of opera and concert repertoire for over 15 years.
Grammar is overlooked today, even in its simplest form. I believe that I have the skills to help a student recognize spelling and grammatical rules, as well as enforce practical application. Having studied second languages including Italian, German and French (to a lesser degree), my familiarity and eye for words and usage is strong.
I am an expert in teaching Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, and Excel basics.
I studied piano with one of the foremost teachers in the Midwest, Emilio del Rosario at the Music Center of the North Shore in Chicago for ten years from grade school on. Through recognition as a promising pianist by way of getting first place in the Society of American Musician competitions, I was accepted on scholarship to Indiana University as a piano performance major.
Proper grammar and spelling are vital skills when using the English language as a student and ultimately in the business world. One gains respect by usage by mastering these tools. I can easily assist in helping students go over essays, reports, compositions, etc. by teaching the individual to scan problems within a document and training the person to eventually do this task on his/her own.
I currently sing with Allegrezza Singers in Lakeview, a burrow in Chicago. As part of the audition process, I had to pass a sight singing exam. I have had to be in this position many times throughout both my singing career and as a piano accompanist.
I have a Bachelor degree from Northwestern University in Music and sang with professional opera companies for over 15 years regionally and abroad. Prior to college, I studied piano for over 10 years. Of the organizations I have sung with, Lyric Opera of Chicago is one of them. I am happy to provide references if needed.
