About Melissa

I am a 2014 Golden Apple Scholar, a prestigious scholarship program that specializes in taking a select group of college students and giving them the necessary tools to become amazing future teachers in schools of need throughout Illinois. I have already spent two summers teaching in high schools throughout Chicago, it was an amazing experience. Apart from that, I also tutor college students at my university. I am a secondary education major, so I am hoping that more tutoring experience will help me become a better teacher.

I love watching the students that I tutor accomplish things that they thought they never could. I believe that every student is capable of doing great things, some just need more push than others, and that is why I'm here.

I am a full-time student, so I can only do tutoring online. However, I am willing to do Skype calls or exchange e-mails in order to help students reach their full potential. I do NOT charge for lessons in which the parent and/or student are not satisfied with my tutoring.

For the past two summers, I taught several summer school math classes in high schools in Chicago. My first summer I taught a class of around 30 students high school Algebra, and my second summer I taught a slightly larger group of high school students, 38 total, high school trigonometry as well as geometry. Even after the classes finished, students would reach out to me during the regular academic school year for additional help.

I am currently a Chemistry major at Eastern Illinois University, so I have a great understanding of the subject. Furthermore, I am currently tutoring this subject at my university. Also, I graduated top of my class and received special honors for my understanding of the subject.

I am excited to hear back from you and help you become more successful with your studies and academic endeavors!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been teaching several different levels of math, including Algebra 1, for the past 2 summers as a Golden Apple Scholar. I also took honors level Algebra 1 in high school and received high marks. My teaching method includes starting off with easier problems in order to boost the students' confidence then gradually making way to harder problems.

Algebra 2

I have taught several different levels of math, including Algebra 2, as a Golden Apple Scholar. I taught this subject to several high schools around the Chicagoland area. While in high school, I took Advanced Algebra and did very well. To teach a subject like math, I believe the best way is through practicing several types of problems , gradually getting harder so that the students' confidence builds as well as their knowledge of the subject.

Chemistry

I am a chemistry major at EIU. Along with that, I tutor current college students who are taking the general chemistry courses. After a lesson, its great to see how much more confident students feel about a subject that most find somewhat difficult.
