About Sonya

Hello! I am currently a student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign majoring in Chemistry, and I am very excited to continue tutoring students in the nearby area. In high school, I was a peer tutor for several students consistently, and I graduated from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in 2012. I have tutored in ACT and SAT preparation, mathematics, chemistry, ASVAB, SSAT, and other subject areas. I have spent over 800 hours helping students pinpoint exactly where they are having difficulty. These experiences have helped me become understanding of the different backgrounds of all the students I tutor.

One particular example that sticks out to me is a friend who had to miss her first semester of junior year of high school due to a family issue. When she returned to school, I helped her work through geometry and Algebra II material almost every day for two and a half months of the semester. She told me that she had previously struggled in this material but now felt much more confident with the classes. I felt so rewarded that I was able to use my time to help her.

I would like to use this opportunity as a way to communicate with students and instill confidence in each student. My goal as a one-on-one tutor is to meet the needs of you or your child's learning style. Tutoring is a very valuable part of my life, because it helps me afford my own educational goals while being able to help others with theirs. I try to keep my rates as low as possible, as I truly believe that a quality education should be accessible for students of all backgrounds. I look forward to meeting you, and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have provided several other students near my age and below with tutoring relevant to the ACT English section. I am very familiar with the structure and type of questions associated with this part of the test, and I have put together several strategies to help students approach the type of questions that are asked on the ACT English portion.

ACT Math

I have provided several other students near my age and below with tutoring relevant to the ACT Math section. I am very familiar with the structure and type of questions associated with this part of the test, and I have put together several strategies to help students approach the type of questions that are asked on the ACT Math portion.

Algebra 1

I have tutored students in Algebra I material since 2009. The most memorable experience I have had with Algebra I tutoring was when I helped two students in the grade below me bring their grades up from a C- borderline grade to an A- by the end of the semester.

Algebra 2

I've provided 70 hours in Algebra II Basic and Advanced Tutoring.

Chemistry

I have taken introductory accelerated chemistry courses and respective labs, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry courses. These have all prepared me to tutor students in general chemistry and introductory organic chemistry. Currently, I am mostly focusing on tutoring students in organic chemistry classes.

Differential Equations

I have taken Differential Equations and am a tutor for Differential Equations at my college campus this semester. I have put together multiple study guides and strategies for the class for myself and a few fellow students.

Geometry

I have tutored students of all ages in basic, accelerated, and advanced geometry at both the high school and community college course levels. I am very comfortable helping students work through homework assignments, understanding textbook examples, and preparing for exams in this course. I also tutor Geometry as a subject included in standardized tests (ACT/SAT).

Organic Chemistry

I tutor Introductory Organic Chemistry at my campus, UIUC. I have experience helping students prepare for organic chemistry finals, and can teach this subject on the high school and college level.

Prealgebra

I have tutored students in Prealgebra for the last seven years, starting with a pretest for arithmetic and introductory math skills and progressing to building blocks for success in Algebra later on.

Study Skills

I have over 300 hours of peer tutor experience from sixth grade to now, my second year of college. I have learned how to identify the needs of students in order to provide them with the best study and test-taking strategies. I am especially experienced with providing standardized test taking skills.
