About Linda

University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana 1965-1971

Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education

San Diego State University at San Diego, CA

Math specialist certification

I've recently retired from 40 years of teaching. Locally, I taught at Washington, Leal, and Yankee Ridge elementary Schools and was directory of one of the State of Illinois' Gifted Area Service Centers. After moving to San Diego I taught for 30 years in elementary (intermediate level) and middle schools. At the middle school level I taught 6th grade math and 7th grade pre-algebra, 6th grade-English, science, and social studies.

Frequently, students just need some individual attention. As a teacher I tried to be available to my individual students before and after school, as well as at lunch, if they wanted to work as a small group. I, also, worked for the YMCA as a tutor for a number of years. I often taught summer school, but I'd much rather reach students before they felt so down and had so many leaning challenges.

I had learning disabilities growing up and I've always thought that experience helped me more sensitive to the needs of struggling students. Sometimes it is just KEY concepts a student is missing, or they need help establishing study habits, or developing organizational skills. Frustration and/or loss of confidence can make it difficult to make the desired progress. I'm willing to do whatever it takes. With your permission, I'd be willing to discuss your child's needs with his/her current needs, so we could more easily develop a plan of action. It's not unusual for students to resist tutoring. I have a lot of patience, experience, and high expectations for all.

All subjects have key concepts that are essential to learn at certain points on the learning spiral. It is important to fill in these gapes, learn to look for and recognize repeating patterns, and PRACTICE. I know how frustrating math, writing, and reading can be, if you don't "get it" yet. I'd like to help your child feel more successful. Learning can so empowering. Learning how to learn is not obvious to all students. Let me help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught at the elementary level for 25 years in both Illinois and California. I've taught many subjects ares. I found my years at the middle school level gave me a better idea of what skills, aptitudes, and behaviors would most be needed when elementary kids reached the next level. I've taught below grade level struggling learners, English Language learners, Gifted students, and those with dyslexia, ADHD, and other special needs students.

Study Skills

I taught for 25 years at the elementary level and 15 years in middle school in both Illinois and California. Too frequently students were not succeeding because they lacked good study skills. Years of inservice training, and my personal experience with my students and their parents have given me a good background in how to assist with study skills.
