I am a semi-retired Biologist and Ecologist who has his own business in Applied Ecology. I have been certified to be a Substitute Teacher for McHenry and Lake County high schools and junior highs. As an Ecologist, I conduct biological field surveys - plant, animal, natural communities - and prepare reports which analyze data and recommend actions for preserving and managing the natural areas I study. Most of this work is done for public agencies such as Lake County and DuPage County Forest Preserve Districts, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and Long Grove Park District. I have given numerous presentations on my work and knowledge to a wide variety of audiences ranging from the general public (all ages) to technical scientific societies. Ecology is a very multidisciplinary field so I am sharing my knowledge on several subjects in addition to biology, such as algebra, geology, and geography. As part of my work as an ecologist, I have been able to train interns and staff members in one-on-one situations using my 35 years of work experience. I very much enjoy this form of teaching because it enables me to track the progress of my trainees and adjust their educational experience to maximize their understanding of subject material. Because I am a practicing scientist I have the ability to show a student how their knowledge is applied to their daily lives and future educational training. I have frequently made recommendations for additional learning and training as they continue their educational experience. I have written letters of recommendation for many interns and co-workers seeking jobs or additional schooling.
My enthusiasm for my work and my thirst for knowledge have been, and continue to be, my greatest assets as a student and teacher. I have found that that enthusiasm is a major factor enabling me to stimulate others to learn. My desire to be thorough and always give my best effort helps others set higher standards of accomplishment. In my role as a mentor to individuals and small groups I can teach others to be problem solvers not strictly memorizers who will forget what they have learned after passing the next test. I frequently relate my personal experiences as examples of the application of my knowledge to a wide variety problems. I make an extra effort to communicate in an understandable language, one that a student or intern can clearly interpret at his/her age and educational level. Finally, my primary goal as a teacher/tutor is to deliver knowledge directly applicable to a student's needs, and to be certain that, at the conclusion of the tutorial sessions, they are confident masters of the core of the subject matter. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Knowledge of human anatomy is very valuable in everyday life as it helps you understand how each of your organs functions and how diseases interfere with normal conditions. I would enjoy teaching you the basic parts of the human body and how they work, whether you use it personally or professionally. If you are interested in medical science as a career, I can give you the foundation you will need to pursue further education in this field. Educated in college as a biologist, I have much of the fundamental knowledge it takes to teach and tutor anatomy.
I am a retired biology teacher, mentor, and practitioner with a strong base of knowledge in ecology, zoology, and botany. Throughout my younger years as a student, I was drawn to the field because of my deep interest in the diversity of life. I had very high grades in biology (and other subjects) because of my strong work ethic. Even in retirement, I am continuing to work as an ecological consultant, substitute teacher, and tutor.
I have a very strong working knowledge of botany, accumulated first in the college classroom, and then especially in conducting botanical surveys of many forest preserves and conservation areas in the Midwest. I have taught many classes in plant identification. As a practicing botanist, I have trained and tutored interns, co-workers, and volunteers in all aspects of plant anatomy, ecology, and taxonomy. I am hoping to teach botany as a substitute in local high schools and junior highs, as well as doing so as a regional tutor.
Ecology has always been my favorite subject. I have an extensive background as a practicing ecologist, working as a field scientist collecting and analyzing data and preparing professional reports on the results. I have taught ecology as an instructor for college students, as a presenter at conferences, as a speaker at meetings for the general public, and as a tutor for interns and staff at my place of work. I have dedicated my life to the conservation of Midwestern plants, animals, and natural communities.
Geography is one of the most practical and useful subjects in today's school curriculum. I have used GPS and GIS technologies repeatedly in my work as an ecologist. My doctoral thesis was a geographical analysis of quantitative variation in an insect found in the western U.S. My knowledge of world geography is essential as I study current international and national use on a daily basis.
I have over 40 years of experience grading essay exams and/or reports for students, interns, and fellow staff members. I have always addressed errors in grammar and spelling during this time. I have alway proofread my own drafts of reports and publications, with or without "spell check or grammar check". I would love to help you improve your writing skills by teaching you the generally accepted ways of structuring sentences.
My educational background included prealgebra and algebra, as well as more advanced courses such as calculus. I consistently got A grades in math throughout my years in school. This gave me a very sound foundation in all mathematical subjects, including prealgebra. I often tutored classmates and friends in a wide variety of mathematical subjects, and I am acutely aware of the need for this type of tutoring because many students have difficulty thinking and solving basic math problems, such as those requiring basic knowledge in prealgebra.
I have 40 years of experience proofreading test essay answers, term papers, and reports, and my own technical papers and publications. I believe this will enable me to teach students how to apply the rules of grammar and spelling to their own work. While this will not directly allow you to make changes on test essay questions, it will improve your ability to write more coherently in the first place. This will give you more confidence in your writing ability, essential to your success in later high school years and in college.
The ability to write coherent sentences and paragraphs is a necessary prerequisite for most other academic subjects. I have over 40 years of experience writing articles for general audiences, reports for scientific publications, and tests for students and interns. When I have graded essay questions and reports written by students I always include remarks on sentence organization, as well as the accuracy of answers. I have helped staff members improve their writing skills by suggesting reorganization of the contents of their technical reports and proposed work plans.
