I am a passionate educator with diverse experience teaching learners of all ages and with experience outside of the traditional classroom setting. I worked for a leading national tutoring company for 10 years where I taught Reading, Writing, Study Skills, Math (Elementary through basic Algebra), ACT Prep for English, Reading, Writing and Science, and Homework Support for English, Social Studies/History, Science (Earth Science and Environmental Science/Ecology), and Math (Elementary through basic Algebra). I have a BA in English/Secondary Education and an MA in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Sustainable Development and Policy. I strongly believe that all students can excel once they find their own learning styles and when they see the connection of what they are learning to everyday life.
I am what most people would consider a life-long learner. I keep going back to school because I find that there is more that I want to learn. I also enjoy interacting with other students and hearing their perspectives. I believe this makes me a better tutor as I understand where the student is coming from and I know the struggles of juggling school with other commitments.
One size does not fill all when it comes to learning. I like to find my student's learning style and tailor a lesson to fit that style. Each of us learns in different ways. Some are more visual, while others need hands-on learning to be successful. Together we can be creative and find a method that makes learning fun for the individual. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I love teaching history, especially American History. I have worked with many students to help them pass the U.S. Constitution test and to find the connections between the past and the present. Once a student sees the connections, history is fun and interesting.
There is also a natural connection between History and Literature. As an English teacher, I constantly tell my students to look at the time period in which the novel is written and they will better understand the writer and the plot. Writers are usually commenting on the social issues of the time, so knowing your history will make you successful in English as well.
I am an avowed "tree hugger" so teaching ecology and environmental science is a passion. I have a MA in Environmental Studies and have worked with many students to help them see the connection between what they are learning and the world around them.
I have extensive experience teaching K-6th grade subject matter including Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing. I substitute taught long term in 5th grade and spent 10 years tuoring at a national tutoring company where I taught all levels of Math from K through 8th grade, reading which included phonics, vocabulary aquisition, and comprehension; writing which included the basics of sentence structure, author's purpose, intended audience and paragraph construction to ensure proper use of topic sentences and supporting details; social studies which included geography, American History, World History and World cultures; and Science. In addition, I taught a Math and Science enrichment program for Preschool through K where I designed a science program based on the Early Elementary curriculum used in the State of Illinois. I hold a MA in Environmental Studies and am very comfortable teaching science. I am certified through WyzAnt to teach Elementary Marth, Elementary Science, Geography, Grammar, Literature, English, Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Writing.
The basics of elementary math can be daunting for some learners, but there are many ways of learning math. I use different approaches to help students become successful and feel more confident when completing homework and on tests.
Science is all around us from the cooking we do to the bugs crawling in our backyard. I love to show students how to make those connections so that science isn't some isolated subject taught in school, but something that they already have knowledge of and that influences their day to day lives.
The written word is beautiful. It can evoke emotions in the reader and writer like few other things can. Instilling a love of reading in my students is always one of my goals when working with new students. Often this requires a little detective work to find a genre that appeals to the reader.
Reading on a regular basis is also the foundation for becoming a good writer. It exposes the reader to standard written English allowing them to become proficient in recognizing correctly written sentence structure and to appreciate literary techniques. This in turn translates to better writing skills.
Geography isn't just about memorizing the names of countries; it's about understanding everything about a particular place and how its location effects everything in the lives of the people who live there. Location dictates the crops that grow in a region and the types of jobs that can be found in the region as a result. Location determines the history of a country and its future. In many cases it influences the outcome of an invasion from hostile forces or its importance in an industry.
Learning these types of things makes learning geography exciting and relevant in a student's day to day life and extends his or her understanding of other subjects like history to a higher level.
