About Andrea

My name is Andrea S., I'm 19 years old, and I currently attend Southern Illinois University- Carbondale where I am double majoring in Spanish Education and International Studies with a focus in Latin America and the Caribbean. I've been a Sunday school teacher for six years, and student taught Spanish 4 as a senior in high school through an internship program that was offered. In addition to being a student teacher, I tutored Spanish as much as 3 hours every day to struggling students in levels ranging from Spanish 1 to AP Spanish.

I've also been tutoring English and math for peers over the course of junior high and high school. I've always been on the accelerated track, so I took Honors English for freshmen and sophomores, AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition; Algebra 1, Algebra 2, trigonometry, pre-calculus, Calculus AB and Statistics. I absolutely love tutoring, and as a future teacher, it would be my pleasure to help in any subject I can!

I have always been in the accelerated math track ever since I was little and have always received high marks in math courses. At SIU, I help with ACT Math preparation. I have taken honors algebra and honors geometry all before high school, and in high school I took advanced algebra 2, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus AB and statistics.

I have taken Spanish for 7 years, have traveled both to Spain and Costa Rica and communicate in Spanish regularly. I student taught Spanish 4 as a senior in high school through an internship program that was offered. In addition to being a student teacher, I tutored Spanish as much as 3 hours every day to struggling students in levels ranging from Spanish 1 to AP Spanish. I am studying Spanish Education at SIUC and feel comfortable both with the content as well as teaching it.

Writing has always been a passion of mine and I have been writing on my own for 9 years. I took Honors English my freshman and sophomore years of high school, AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition. I received Student of the Year twice, as well as the English department award for my work in the department.

I took photography for 2 years in high school and can work my way around a darkroom. I have been using photoshop for 4 years and upload photos to stock photo websites, such as Dreamstime. I can use 35mm film cameras, point and shoot digital cameras, DSLR cameras, polaroids and 120 film cameras

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My score on the ACT English test was 35, and I have helped two other individuals raise their scores on this section.

Algebra 1

I started algebra in 4th grade gifted courses and continued to build on my skills through high school statistics.

Photography

I took photography for 2 years in high school, but have been taking artistic photographs for 6 years. I am skilled in darkroom photography, DSLR functions and Photoshop. I currently add photos to competitive stock photo websites.

Prealgebra

I started prealgebra in 3rd grade gifted courses and continued to build on my skills through high school statistics. This means I have been building on my prealgebra skills for 11 years. I tutored prealgebra for 3 years, and still tutor prealgebra at my university privately.

Proofreading

I have been proofreading papers for 6 years, and I hold a strong sense of grammar. I have taken AP Literature and Composition as well as AP Language and Composition, and I received AP credit in both courses for my strong writing capabilities.

Public Speaking

I was on my school's Speech team for 3 years, and in that time served as JV Captain my second year and Vice President my third year. I went to sectionals for my special occasion speech and coached two individuals to state. As a future teacher, I regularly give presentations and am skilled in the different facets required to give a good speech, both in writing and presentation.

Reading

I am currently a bilingual reading tutor in a fourth grade classroom and have practiced reading skills to enhance reading comprehension.

Spanish

I have taken 7 years of Spanish in school and am currently studying Spanish Education at Southern Illinois University. I student taught Spanish 4 and have been privately tutoring Spanish for 4 years. I translate notes for an elementary school for the Spanish-speaking population, I am an aid in a bilingual elementary classroom, and love Spanish!

Study Skills

As a future teacher, I have spent many years tutoring in high school and junior high where I have found that the main reasons students do poorly on exams and quizzes resulted from bad study skills. I am skilled at creating plans with the students to help them study smarter, not necessarily longer. I am trained in different learning styles from my year of student teaching, and I can assist students in finding what learning style suits them best.

Theatre

I did theater for 3 years at my high school as well as individual competitive acting for 3 years. I student directed my senior year of high school and have over 700 hours in the theater. I have served as publicity chair, props and set chair, and captain of my individual competitive acting team. I went to the sectionals for the state series in competitive acting, and coached another group to state my senior year of high school.
