Hello Parents and Students,
My name is Joe. I am 29 years old and a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. I graduated with an BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and I currently work for the Illinois Department of Transportation as an Design Engineer. I have a long history with mathmatics. I have years of experience with tutoring. I have tutored and mentored with a program called Americorps with the Meridian Elementary School down in Mounds, IL. Also, I have tutored students at the Carbondale Boys and Girls club. I believe that many students do not excel in math because they do not grasp the very basic fundamentals. Math requires you to learn the basics in order to excel further, the different lesson's build upon each other. I believe if a student gets the fundamentals, they will eliminate their math difficulties.
A prime method for any student to grasp a better understanding is one on one tutoring sessions if they are having trouble. It allows the student to work at a slower pace and grasp the understanding necessary to complete the lesson. When in a traditional classroom setting a teacher is not able to give that focal one on one attention the student may require. Hello Parents and Students,

Right after just his second pre-algebra tutoring session with Joe our 14 year old son came up to me said "Dad, he's helped me want to do math." When we got home from that session our son voluntarily went to his math book and started reading the next chapter in his math book, as well as doing several problems in the back of the chapter. This was a chapter his teacher was going to cover in class the next day, but had not yet done so. This is initiative in math we had not seen before.
I don't take reviewing a persons work lightly and this one is well deserved.
Joe was awesome... He and my son worked on Algebra! My 13 year old says... "He's just really cool." It makes me, the mom, so happy to know that my son is engaged and excited to be tutored!!!
My son said he actually grasped the problems that we could not help him with after help from Joe. I was amazed the next day when I gave him about 20 problems to practice and he only missed 2. Normally he would miss more than that. This is very pleasing since this was his first session with Joe. I also received great feedback from Joe.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
