About Mark

Bio

I'm a licensed teacher (Illinois PEL) with a J.D. and more than 20 years of experience as a professional writer and legal analyst. For the last 12 years I've been very successful in helping students boost their ACT scores. Writing is my vocation; tutoring is my passion.

I have worked with students in second grade, graduate school, and every level in between. My particular areas of expertise include ACT prep, expository writing, English grammar, proofreading, and mathematics.

I have a B.A. in Education (K-9) with a specialization in math. Strong math students often breeze through the algebra/trig sections of the ACT but are tripped up by the simpler pre-algebra and geometry problems. Other students struggle with time management. I'll diagnose your strengths and weaknesses, if you're not already aware of them, and create a plan to address your weaknesses.

ACT science is, for many students, the most difficult part of the exam. In my opinion, it's the easiest part, if you know how to attack it. If you learn to think, rather than regurgitate information, you will do well on the science section of the ACT. I use a modified Socratic approach in my tutorials, and that approach is heavily based on independent thinking. The rote memorization of facts and the recognition of a correct answer in a list of multiple choice possibilities will take you part of the way, but no further. Learning to think and analyze is essential. My goal is to turn critical thinking into a habit that will reap benefits far beyond the ACT.

I have 12 years of experience as an ACT/writing/grammar tutor. I can help students with their proficiency in reading comprehension and in the mechanics of grammar and usage. It will likely take some concerted effort and practice, but the benefits gained will be readily applicable to college work and future employment.

The ACT requires more than mere knowledge. It also requires active reading, critical thinking, and time management skills. Just as important and often overlooked is the discipline of practice. Taking complete exams under test conditions is, in my opinion, an essential element of test preparation. Sitting for the ACT exam and having the feeling that you've "been there, done that" is a tremendous confidence builder and a significant reliever of stress. For that reason, I ask all of my students to purchase "The Official ACT Prep Guide."
