University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Mathematics education)
Northeastern Illinois University (Master's)
I have taught pre-algebra, algebra 1 and geometry for over 34 years. I have both a bachelor's and a master's degree in mathematics education. I also have taken 45 additional credits in mathematics and special education. I love to help students understand the material and often present concepts in different ways in order to enable the students to grasp the concepts. I often make my own hands-on materials so students can visualize and "touch" the concept. I have spent some time working with students that have learning problems, especially in the area of math, and am often successful in getting concepts across.
I served as mathematics department chair for my high school for over 15 years and often helped teachers plan how to present difficult concepts. After retirement, I worked for a non-profit organization tutoring students with disabilities. I worked with all levels of students including those who needed to count money and understand basic math operations.
I have taught these courses for many years and have accumulated many " tricks" for getting difficult ideas across. I love to help 5th grade-8th grade students grasp basic algebra and geometry concepts.
Please contact me for help in understanding basic math concepts. I like to help students really understand the concept, not just memorize an algorithm.
I believe that my experience helps me reach the students. Newer graduates may understand the concepts but do not know how to explain them in many different ways. Barbara is great at providing analogies to help explain concepts. She came prepared knowing exactly what the material was that was being studied and what was going to be on the upcoming test. She knows the curruculum and knows how to explain it many different ways.
She is always ready for the lesson she needs to teach. In addition, she is absolutely a great tutor who is very passionate for what she is doing.Lastly, I could observe that she is an expert in Algebra and Geometry.
Very helpful to my daughter. Like reviews said, used manipulatives to help further explain. So helpful, that my daughter insisted upon scheduling another session on on the spot.
She is an Excellent Tutor who helped my middle schooler work on long division and complicated word problems, and also understand the Metric system.
She made them so fun and easy for him, and he was very happy.
Barbara has the knowledge to teach math at every level. She understands how a step by step approach allows the student to comprehend and eventually become able to do it on their own. She prepares ahead of time by bringing practice sheets based on the lesson. She even gave a follow up phone call to make sure one particular area was clearly understood. Thank you Barbara. See you again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught algebra 1 for many years and know how to make sure all learners get the concepts.
I taught all levels of geometry for 35 years. I have taken numerous seminars on geometry and presented geometry workshops at Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics conventions. I have made many geometry manipulatives and use them to explain concepts to my students. I believe that I am able to reach all types of learners.
I taught math at all levels for thirty-five years.
