About Steven

Educating students with special needs to become life-long learners is my passion. My 10 years as a Special Education teacher coupled with a Master's degree in Special Education have taught me how to effectively teach students with mild-moderate learning disabilities. My ability to work within the guidelines and goals and objectives of a student's IEP is critical to a successful working relationship.

I specialize in teaching students how to write (answering questions for a lesson, grammar usage, or writing an essay), reading (letter/word identification and comprehension), study skills, basic math, or working through and understanding a homework assignment. I also work with students on organizational skills and time management. I will use each session to get to know each student both academically and personally, so that I may more effectively teach them in a way that caters to their individual needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I am a former college and semi-professional baseball player. I've coached high school, travel, and youth league baseball. I was primarily a pitcher, but am adept at all positions from a defensive standpoint. I am also a highly skilled hitting instructor. I'm a student of the game.

Special Needs

I possess an MS in Special Education. I have 10 years of experience teaching students with special needs. Additionally, I am licensed to teach K-12 students with mild/moderate disabilities in state of Illinois.

Theatre

I am an actor with an extensive stage resume. I studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Pasadena, CA. Some of my stage experience includes the role of Danny in "Night Must Fall," Barnett Lloyd in "Crimes of the Heart," and Actor Three in "The Dining Room." I have also appeared in several commercials. I've been trained through the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in diction, movement, script study, and character analysis. I am very qualified to be a tutor in this subject. Please contact me if you have any questions.
