My devotion to teaching stems from my lifelong love of discovery. As a magna cum laude graduate in my undergraduate program and both of my graduate programs, I recognize the need for hard work and dedication to education. That being said, I refuse to believe that hard work and fun are mutually exclusive. As a school teacher and private tutor for the past 25 years, I have helped thousands of young minds along the road to improved academic performance and test scores, while never sacrificing enjoyment of the process along the way. I wouldn't trade my job for anything in the world!
One of the most rewarding services I provide is the development and improvement of study skills at all levels of education, elementary school through college. Although I specialize in tutoring English, math, science, and social studies and test preparation at the elementary through middle school levels for success in school, I provide study skills techniques to all of my students as an added bonus. Additionally, I provide Act and SAT test taking strategy tutoring, as well as, college and scholarship application services with an amazing degree of success leading to numerous college choices for my students. My students also receive the added benefit of reasonable email and telephone support between tutoring sessions.
I hold myself to very high standards, and often request feedback from parents and students. This allows me to adjust my tutoring to the unique needs of each student under my care.
I try to be as flexible as possible, however, as I prepare lessons in advance of tutoring sessions, I require cancellation notice 12 hours in advance of a session. I will, however, do my best to schedule a make-up session within 24 hours to avoid charging for a missed tutoring session.
I am available to provide individual and small group lessons for families with multiple children requiring tutoring services. To ensure students have a comfortable, familiar work space, I provide tutoring for students in their own homes. This has the added benefit of allowing me to ensure that students have adequate space, light, and supplies to complete their studies when working independently.
I look forward to hearing from you soon and beginning our journey to better grades and test scores together! My devotion to teaching stems from my lifelong love of discovery. I have two girls, a kindergartner and second grader, who are being tutored by Elyse. My kindergartner is accelerated, and needs additional stimulation and higher-level exposure that she can't get at school, and my 2nd grader needs help stretching her reading skills.
Elyse is always punctual, very organized and has a lesson plan for both girls that I can access so they can practice between sessions. She's also knowledgable about common core and is helping both girls become comfortable with that style of testing.
Both my girls love working with Elyse and look forward to their sessions.
I appreciate that Elyse breaks down each lesson with me in detail to let me know exactly what she worked on with my kids.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
