I have a strong knowledge of plant biology as well as general biology. I was a teaching assistant in college and led students in undergraduate biology classes as well as in graduate-level botany. I enjoy working one-on-one with students to determine the best possible way for them to learn the material needed. Sometimes students learn best with quizzes/homework, while other learn from hands-on examples. In my free time, I enjoy bird-watching and leading nature hikes through local forest preserves. In addition to my current botany and general biology knowledge, I have experience with native ecosystem restoration, and have studied the interactions between plants and animals in various ecological settings. I am available to tutor late afternoons and evenings, and most weekends, and I am also willing to respond to questions by email.

I am more than willing to work out a new hourly rate if you need to. I am more interested in helping people learn new subjects than having a fixed "per hour" charge.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Botany is the study of plants and their life cycles. Areas of study include photosynthesis, growth habits, plant relationships within ecosystems, and plant metabolism. Study also includes cell structure and organ systems. Secondary plant metabolism is included at a higher level of study and includes biochemistry and the ability of the plant to use chemicals for defense, pollination/reproduction, and growth regulation.
I received my Master's Degree in Plant Biology from the University of Illinois. My studies focused on the medicinal biochemicals produced by plants, and my thesis involved the antioxidant/anticancer benefits of cranberries. Additional study included plant anatomy, plant evolution, and taxonomy. I have independently studied plants in their native ecosystems, focusing on the Midwest prairies and woodlands.
I have experience with line and figure drawing. Since high school I have worked personally on colored pencil, charcoal, and gray-scale artwork. My specialty is still-life and plant art, but I am studying figure drawing at the moment. While I have no formal education, I have fifteen years of practice and can offer tips on shading, coloring, and perspective.
I have been painting with watercolors and acrylics for over 7 years. Watercolor techniques include blending colors and creating effective washes. Acrylic techniques include coloring, shading, and realistic detail. My primary paintings include plants and up-close flowers, as well as landscapes.
