About Rachel

I am a historian and archaeologist who has traveled all over Europe learning about these two vast fields of study. I have worked with kids of all ages and there is never a dull moment.

Currently, I am a graduate student earning my Master's degree. I have tutored undergraduate students on numerous occasions for nearly two years, and have helped them perform better on exams and write better papers. In addition, I designed lectures for my students and taught upward of 80 students at once. When I am not working on my thesis, I am working as a state archaeologist (yes, paid to play in the dirt!). My undergraduate degree is in classical archaeology and history, but I have excavated in the United States and in Europe. I specialize in the Middle Ages, but I have tutored classes in world history and Western civilization (harder for most students). I can teach other periods and regions as well.

I myself enjoy writing and editing (sounds tedious and crazy, I know). I am an excellent editor, having published an article as an undergraduate. Writing and proofreading skills are essential to survive in today's job market.

Tutoring is great for me. My students are doing better and they are enjoying what they learn now that they do not feel so overwhelmed. History, especially, can be challenging. It looks like a mess of dates and people and battles, but it is so much more than that, I promise. Helping these kids through it and excel at it makes me feel proud of them. For them to succeed in a difficult subject makes all the difference.

History and writing/proofreading can be terrifying, but I can help. I am flexible and can adjust my teaching so you get the best. I want to help my students do the best they can and not only come to tolerate, but enjoy, history, archaeology, and writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Archaeology

I earned a bachelor of arts in archaeology and I am currently employed with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey as an archaeological specialist. I have excavated in the United States and in Europe, and have worked with museums and cultural resource management firms.

European History

I am a Master's student specializing in the Middle Ages and have paid particular attention to Eastern Europe. My thesis looks at race and culture and social history in the fifteenth century. In addition, I have taken numerous classes in European history and studied it independently.

Proofreading

I am a Master's student in history, so writing and proofreading is an essential skill. Instead of using the English-course methods, I write academically, but I am not convoluted. I have been published, and I have used my expertise to help undergraduates (and other grad students) write better papers. I can identify structural weaknesses, difficult arguments, and problems with grammar.

World History

I am a Master's student earning a degree in history, specializing in the Middle Ages with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. I have tutored undergraduates in Western civilizations/world history for nearly two years. I work one-on-one with students to identify needs and strengths.
