Indiana University (Journalism, German)
I am a mature college graduate from Indiana University with degrees in journalism and German. I have 13+ years of teaching experience with children ranging in age from five to sixteen, and working with a wide range of learning styles and temperaments. One of my strongest skills is knowing how to tailor a student's learning experience to their needs, interests, and learning styles. I have found that a student who is fully engaged will learn better as they rediscover their love of learning and their natural curiosity and wonder will take over. When the walls of resistance are dismantled, then the real work and joy of learning can take place and obstacles can be overcome in the learning process. My students have gone on to make the successful transition from individualized one-on-one home tutoring to a public school setting, achieving high marks in their classes.
I am also an experienced editor in both educational and professional settings. My professional experiences include editing books for IU Press and writing in-house quarterly publications for a manufacturing company. My first love though is to see a young student's face light up with understanding and fascination as they grasp the material they are studying. I look forward to working with your young person to help them overcome their challenges and become a vibrant and enthusiastic learner in the subject in which they formerly struggled. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 13+ years experience of homeschooling five gifted children ranging in ages from 4 to 16 and with varied learning styles. Two of my children (aged 13 and 18) have made successful transitions to public school and are currently earning high grade-point averages. My focus is on helping students to love learning, and to provide creative tools and resources so that they can overcome obstacles in their educational experience.
