About Amreen

I have been tutoring math and all sciences since 1995. I have been trained in tutoring for all learning styles, study skills, test-taking skills, time management, workload organization, and most importantly [to me] learning to learn on your own. In 2008, I became a CRLA III certified tutor (highest level certification).

I have also been teaching at the collegiate and high school level since 1998. At the collegiate level, I teach all sciences (primarily Biology) and some introductory level math courses. At the high school level, I teach and train high school students for ACT Science Reasoning and ACT test-taking tactics.

Most recently, I began instructing and training college juniors and seniors for Medical College Admission Testing (MCAT). For this position, I teach introductory and advanced levels of Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Verbal Reasoning, and Writing.

I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (major - Biology) in 1998, a Master of Science Degree (focus - Molecular Biology and Genetics) in 2000, and an Associate in Applied Science Degree in 2009 (major - Digital Media Communications, focus - print/online publishing and video production).

Tutoring was my first job and still my job and even more so, my passion. My drive to continue tutoring is seeing my students succeed test by test (step by step) and thus becoming enthusiastic about learning [even math] and driven to continue education and furthermore, excelling beyond expectations. Learning is fun. And when it is fun, it becomes easy. And when it becomes easy, it is exciting. When it is exciting, students progress to the highest levels possible. This is my goal.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In my 17 years of tutoring, the subject I have tutored the most is Algebra -- because I have tutored it so much, I have come to really like math.

I am confident I can give you the tools necessary to be successful throughout your Algebra course(s).

I show my students the math, and when they see it, they are able to attack any type of problem -- even the big, clunky word problems - the most intimidating of all algebraic problems.

My students go from saying "I hate math" to "math is actually kinda fun."

I have been trained to teach and tutor all sections of MCAT content and test-taking strategy and success skills. The subjects of MCAT include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Organic Chemistry, Verbal Reasoning, and Writing Sample (although the Writing Sample section will be eliminated from MCAT as of January 2013).

While practicing passage focused questions and science discrete questions with students, I incorporate strategies and skills into the lesson plans to guide students into maintaining focus and optimizing correct answers. Along the way, I also bring up hints and tricks based on passage and question type that appear in patterns throughout the exam, thus further optimizing students success.

Organic Chemistry

As a Biological Sciences Instructor, Organic Chemistry is one of my favorite subjects because it is the basis of Biology.

Organic Chemistry is indeed quite intimidating in the beginning, but having the proper foundation, understanding Carbon-based compounds and reactions, will make all your Organic Chemistry courses easier. Understanding organics will also help you in other courses like Biochemistry, Biology and even some concepts in General Chemistry.

I aim to show students the foundations in Organic Chemistry and bring full understanding of Carbon compounds and reactions, which is generally covered in the first part of Organic Chemistry 1. With the proper foundation, students are able to visualize Organic systems and will then thoroughly understand organic reactions, which is the subject matter in the rest of your Organic Chemistry courses.

Study Skills

Beyond having completed several training modules in study skills for College Reading and Learning Association certification, I have always practiced, taught, demonstrated, and instilled within students [during my one-on-one sessions] not only study skills in various areas and across various fields of academics, also have emphasized the importance of effective study skills and habits. I also personalize study skills and habits to the specific needs of individual students, based on their strengths and weaknesses in comprehension and problem solving. The importance of effective study skills and habits becomes apparent to students when the start experiencing success in all their subjects -- not just with the subject in which I tutor them. One of my current WyzAnt students recently expressed with excitement to me that her teacher actually complimented her on her note-taking and thanked me for guiding her on that and encouraging her to revamp the way she takes notes and uses them for studying.

Excellent — I have never understood math the way I do with Amreen. She is very friendly and easy to interact with, patient, and stays on top of things. She is very knowledgeable about math and if you don't understand one way of solving a problem, she has many other ways to show you and won't stop until you get it. Highly recommended. ...
