About Vicky

"A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops." - Henry Brooks Adams

My undergraduate studies resulted in my receiving my Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education English (with a Type 9 Certification and a Middle School Language Arts endorsement) from DePaul University. As my 8 years of teaching began to unfold, I continued my education (via graduate coursework) and attained the following: Type 3 Elementary Certification, Type 29 Transitional Bilingual Certification (focused in Greek), and a Middle School Mathematics endorsement on my Type 9.

I have also taught in various settings: private and public schools, tutoring centers, career & technical facilities, secondary institutions as well as elementary settings. Having my teaching experience range from grades K-12, I realized that my passion for teaching does not entail solely a particular grade level or subject, but the actual concept of being driven to help any student reach their fullest potential overall.

In just 8 years, I have utilized some of my transferable skills, such as being dedicated, open-minded, organized, flexible, intuitive, determined, creative, and patient to help me satisfy the challenges that presented themselves from teaching professionally at so many different settings and grade levels. The benefit of such a background is that I truly know where students come from academically (and developmentally), and where they need to excel to. I understand what is required of students to begin to formulate their very first word in Kindergarten, as well as what is required of secondary students to develop their very first resume, as they tackle their job seeking journey.

In today's society, there are a lot of challenges and distractions that hinder the learning progress. I, too, was a struggling ESL student, with test anxiety, and terribly intimidated by Math. It wasn't until I was guided and coached by the right educators, for my particular learning style that I realized that I, too, can do well. I do NOT have a problem. I am NOT lacking in the intelligence department. I just learn differently, and that is okay. Because I understand that every student learns at a different pace and by using different teaching styles, I am certain that your child (or you!) can progress in their/your studies, so as to find their/your confidence, and spark for learning, once again.

For those of you that are about to embark on the exciting journey of learning Greek...BRAVO! I am very excited to hear about such drives and interests. It fascinates me, and makes me so proud, to see that people care about their roots, and wish to keep the language alive. I have worked with elementary students all the way up to retired adults in the foreign language department. I will not lie that it requires time, dedication, passion, and hard work. But if you want to achieve your goal and learn Greek, you can do it! My passion, and love for my country and our fruitful language, will not allow you to not excel. If you put in the effort that is required, together we will reach your fluency goal. I will make sure of it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I currently work as a Language Arts specialist in a Career and Technical Center for high school students. It is my job to teach students the hiring strategies and skills necessary for attaining a career. Those include the following:
-Resume Writing
-Cover Letter Writing
-Thank You Letter Writing
-Resignation Letter Writing
-Interviewing Skills
-Email Etiquette
-Verbal and Non- Verbal Communication Skills
-Phone Etiquette
-Note Taking Tips
-Completing the Job Application
-Portfolio Development
-Technical Reading and Writing in general

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as an Elementary teacher (grades K-3) for three years, but recently got certified with my Type 3 Elementary Certification. I have 7 years teaching experience, and although I am in a secondary setting now, I am seeking employment in the elementary level again. I feel that that is the level that suits me best.

English was my second language and so I understand what is required and necessary for a student to learn another language. ESL students are very visual creatures. They rely on their visual and auditory skills to learn new words, in addition to forming connections with their native tongue. I am also a certified Type 29 teacher (Transitional Bilingual Certificate). I also worked in a bilingual setting for elementary levels for 3 years. My background initially was in Secondary Education English. I am endorsed in Middle School Language Arts as well. My type 3 Elementary Certification will assist in targeting lower underdeveloped levels of the language.

Greek was my first language, and English my second. With that said, I am fluent in Greek when it comes to reading, writing, and speaking. I also taught in a Greek school for three years, and have provided various independent tutoring sessions.

I worked as an Elementary teacher in a bilingual setting for 3 years. During that experience, we relied solely on Phonics to teach student to read and write. I am pretty well versed in the tips and strategies required to accomplish this task.

Study Skills

I teach study skills to my high school students currently. Being a teacher for 7 years, study skills is a lesson that I review and emphasize a lot. Studying is key to succeeding in Education. Everyone learns and studies differently. I can help students explore what their style is, in order to benefit them academically.
