About Ralph

I can teach anyone from beginners to advanced learners. I have a unique approach to learning how to read music. It is important to learn the proper technique for the saxophone and flute early before you develop bad habits.

I studied music performance for the saxophone and flute as well as piano in collage for five years and then became a student of the local jazz artist, Joe Daily here in Chicago. I have been playing professionally throughout the past 35 years. I have a passion for music that was passed on to me at a young age. As the music director of Faith Church in Stickney, IL I showed my students the importance of learning an instrument. Now my concentration is solely on the saxophone and flute; nothing beats the sweet sounds these instruments make. And every day I continue to hone my skills by practicing and performing.

Once this is mastered, you will have a better idea of how to play and actually have fun playing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I am a professional musician. I have been playing the flute for over 25 years. I majored in Performing commercial music' in collage where my secondary instrument was for the flute. I have been directing music in churches since 1995. I am currently the music director at Oak Park Avenue Baptist Church in Berwyn, IL. Before that, I was the music director and Faith Community Church in Stickney, IL. Before that, I had been in the music ministry at Northside Community Church in Chicago, IL.

I have played flute professionally in various settings, from college bands to jazz. It's a beautiful instrument - when played right. I can help you learn the proper techniques. Flute can be fun to play, but it takes work.

Microsoft Excel

I was a self-learner to Excel. I began using it before Microsoft bought the product in 1995. VBA was built from Basic and became a standard for all macros within the Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). Other products adopted as well such as SQA, Corel Draw, AutoCAD, Word Perfect, etc. Originally, macros were built on a spreadsheet (Macro 4), and calls were made similarly to how VBA macros were are called using references within a worksheet's cell (example: =ThisMacro() ). Even today those types of macros can be written and run in the newer versions of Excel, however, there is no support or documentation from Microsoft; this is used for backward support of excel files written many years ago.

Microsoft tried to phase it out in the mid 2000's by introducing another add-on language (Dynamic Language Run-time, or DLR), but the wide usage of VBA within the Office suite has kept it alive; VBA's parent program, VB6, is no longer supported.

The combination of VBA with Microsoft office, and especially Excel, is a very powerful tool. VBA allows you to take complete control of your computer's power and make it simple to understand. I have used it successfully throughout my career from building simple reports to robust automation systems and everywhere in between.

Besides the VBA programming, the functions that can be applied directly on the worksheet are very powerful. Along with creating complex formulas for calculating, the graphic features and pivot tables are great to work with. Microsoft has also made it easy to connect to other sources without having to get into programming (however, I have preferred using VBA to connect because of the power it has that can extend beyond the constraints of the connections wizards).

Excel programmers were nuts. There were little routines that you could put on a spreadsheet that fired off a back door to Excel. This back door would open a maze-type game that you could play. From version 5 to version 1998 there was always a different type of hidden game. It was done away with in version 2000. Look it up sometime. It was a crazy thing to have in a business program and I think it made allot of businesses upset, but it was kind of fun. I remember sitting at my desk when I was bored and filling in the secret code, having the game pop up and playing it. The end of the maze just took you to a list of names that helped develop Excel.

This is just the history of what I know about Excel. I'm pretty sure I could help you figure out your SQL problem. Let me know.

Saxophone

I am a professional musician. I have been playing the saxophone professionally for over 25 years. I majored in 'Performing commercial music' in collage where my primary instrument was for the saxophone. I am currently the music director at Oak Park Avenue Baptist Church in Berwyn, IL. I have been in this position for three years. Before that, I was the music director and Faith Community Church in Stickney, IL for about 5 years. Before that, I had been in the music ministry at Northside Community Church in Chicago, IL.
