About Gene

One of my favorite activities is to work one on one with a student so that he can learn to do something he hasn't been able to do before. I have worked with young kindergarten children up to older adults. I have more than fifteen years experience as a teacher and tutor.

I believe in getting to know my students and where they are in understanding whatever subject we are working on. Together we need to have clear goals and expectations. Each of us will have tasks to do outside of tutoring session time. I will be preparing for lessons and evaluating student work. My students will have assignments to complete. Some of what we do will be fun, some will involve serious work, but we can both enjoy the rewards of a job well done.

As an elementary teacher, I have taught math, English, reading (from phonemics to advanced), writing and science. I have taught high school biology and some algebra. My Illinois certification includes elementary and high school levels as well as special education endorsements.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My Illinois teachers certificate includes the endorsement for special education (LBSI). I have 43 hours of classes at Northern Illinois University in special education, which include classes about working with children with ADD/ADHD. Algebra 1

My math teaching experience stretches from elementary to college level. I have taught pre-algebra and algebra I to students of various skill levels, including people with learning disabilities. I enjoy teaching math and will start by finding out what my student's present skills are and design tutoring strategies to enable them to succeed in reaching significant goals.

Aspergers

As a life skills/adaptive skills facilitator I met regularly with a client who had Asbergers. Later as a special education teacher I worked with children having disorders in the autistic spectrum, which includes Aspegers Syndrome.
