About Michael

I am retired military and currently teaching math and sciences in local high schools. I have over 4000 hours teaching high school and adult students with a variety of backgrounds. My focus is on student comprehension and skill mastery. I do not care about grades, per se; I care that my students understand the material and can appropriately apply their skills. My philosophy is that as long as students understand and are willing to put in the work, good grades will follow.

In the high school setting, I regularly teach algebra II and am fortunate that my teachers allow me to teach their curriculum. I also tutor algebra I, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus students during lunch hours and after school. Additionally, I have taught chemistry for longer terms, primarily nuclear chemistry, but have a strong background in laboratory procedures and specialize in breaking down the processes of chemistry in a way that makes it understandable and repeatable.

I enjoy math and science and have a deep love of learning--my favorite question is "why?". Because my interests are broad, I often am able to relate specific problems to real-world experiences and help my students come up with different ways of looking at and solving problems.

I love what I do and look forward to helping you succeed!

FUN FACT: I went to culinary school. Not only did I become a pretty good cook, I also excelled at culinary math, cost control and inventory management.

Administrative notes:

CANCELLATION POLICY: I require a 4 hour cancellation notice before missing a session. I understand that emergencies happen and I will address each case individually. If that 4-hour window is not met, I will charge your account at 25% of my rate, per hour (i.e. if I get notice 3 hours before, you will only be charged 25%, etc). Conversely, I will make every attempt to notify you at least 4 hours early if I will not be able to make our scheduled sessions. I will not charge you anything at all if I am not able to make our scheduled appointment. To the maximum extent possible, I will work with you to reschedule sessions as close as feasible to our scheduled time and at a time convenient for you.

AVAILABILITY: Since I am retired, I am fairly flexible. If you need to meet outside of my availability, message me and we may be able to set something up that works for both of us!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

Passing the AFOQT is required before commissioning in the US Military. I was enlisted for 8 years, took my AFOQT and was commissioned for 13 years.

I passed the AFOQT in 1998 with excellent scores. My lowest was an 88 in Pilot and middle 90s on all other areas.

Additionally, I'm an excellent test taker and can coach on how to approach studying for and taking the AFOQT.

Microsoft Access

I have taken classes in object oriented design and database normalization and management. I write my own queries using program queries and SQL statements. I have designed, developed and populated databases for multiple purposes/customers while in the military. I write macros directly in VBA.

Microsoft Excel

I have been writing VBA and macros for several years, as well as detailed in-cell equations. I used Excel daily for project management and budgeting at my last job (3 years). I used it regularly to organize and present data to senior decision makers for over a decade.

Public Speaking

While on active duty (over 20 years), my entire job revolved around public speaking. I have had communication courses through the military as well as in college. Additionally, I taught public speaking to my military and civilian colleagues regularly.

I researched and produced briefings daily and conducted training sessions for my personnel, peers and superiors at least twice a week. My audience varied widely in scope, size and profession. I have been by-name-requested to brief general officers, frequently on an ad hoc and sometimes short notice basis.

My largest group speaking event included over 30 general officers and over 100 other senior officers and staff. I was asked to speak 12 hours before the event and had to overcome technical difficulties with the presentation equipment and electronic files minutes before I was to step to the podium. Both briefings went very well and any problems went unnoticed by my audience.

I specialize in question handling--a skill that (in my opinion) sets expert speakers apart from average.
