About Katelyn

Hello, my potential grasshoppers!

But first, let me tell you a little about myself.

My name is Kate, and I recently graduated from Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and I have an extensive background in Mathematics as well. In high school, I taught weekly classes at my family's church in Belleville, and I have always loved helping people learn.

Now, on to the important information.

I tutor elementary and middle school math, sciences, reading, and writing. For high school, I tutor the same subjects, as well as programming and Greek. I also tutor college level computer science and math classes. In addition, I tutor in drawing for all skills and ages.

I am willing to work with all ages of children, teenagers, and adults. I strongly believe that anyone who has the desire to learn a skill should be allowed the opportunity and the resources to do so.

I also believe that everyone is capable of learning anything, if it is explained in a way that makes sense to them. I consider my job as a tutor to be to find a way to make the information a student needs to understand make sense to that student. People learn in different ways, and sometimes all you really need is someone who can make an effort to understand the way you think, so that they can better communicate with you.

Some specifics about my areas of knowledge might be helpful to you, so here we go!

COMPUTER SCIENCE
I am a software developer by trade. I currently work with Windows 10 on my desktop (Diana) and Ubuntu (version 16.x) on my laptop (Oliver). I also have experience with OSX El Capitan (version 10.x) from my work laptop (Angela). Yes, all of my computers have names. =)
I have experience in Java, Python, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I am also familiar with C, C++, C#, Haskell, and XML.
Some of the frameworks and extensions I have worked with include Django, Java Swing, MySQL, JDBC, jQuery, and jQueryUI.
I have experience working in several environments. My go-to editor is Sublime Text 3, or for Java projects, Eclipse with the Java extension, but I have also worked with Visual Studio, Idle, Android Studio, WordPress, Unity, and MonoDevelop.
Some of my areas of interest include Android programming, machine learning, optical character recognition, and web programming and design.

MATH
Fun Fact: Computer science majors have to take a lot of math classes. No really. A lot.
I love math, and it makes me sad to see so many people hate it, just because they don't understand it. Math is beautiful. I tutor all levels of math up through high school. At the college level, I tutor up through calculus II.

I also tutor high school biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as reading and writing at all levels.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have. I am also willing to set up a consultation appointment, to establish an understanding of what you need, and to see how we can make that happen. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

While pursuing my degree in computer science, I completed a large number of upper level math courses, including Calculus I, II, and III, and Differential Equations, as well as more logic and proof based courses, such as Principles of Mathematics and Discrete Mathematics.

Computer Science

I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Saint Louis University. I have served as group leader on group projects in the course of obtaining my degree. In this position I found myself helping others work on their part of the projects, in addition to working on my own part.

Greek

While obtaining my degree at Saint Louis University, my foreign language requirements were fulfilled by taking courses in Greek. I placed out of GK110 Communicating in Greek I, because I had taken a course on Koine Greek in high school. At SLU I took GK115 Reading Greek II and GK210 Intermediate Greek Language and Literature. Final assignments included translating passages of the New Testament from Greek into English.

Java

I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Saint Louis University. Most of my work has been in Python and Java.

Teaching is a gift and Katelyn has that gift! She was able to explain the when, how and why to use fundamental coding in Java to my daughter. This language is my daughter's initial experience to the computer science world. Coding as the introduction was crashing her confidence in her education journey. Just from their first lesson, Katelyn helped her feel more able to conquer this quest of learni
