In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During high school, I worked with four year old children my sophomore year and three year old my junior year. During this time, I taught them simple handwriting, how to hold a pencil and provided them with activities, which included tracing letters of the alphabet. I know how to write cursive also.
During high school, I took many math courses, including prealgebra, algebra and precalculus. I was awarded the Distinguished Hawk Award for tutoring in prealgebra. At UIC, I have only taken one math class. Next semester, I am taking Statistical Methods in Behavioral Science. This course includes statistical inference, probability distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, correlation and analysis of variance.
I am currently an English minor, but I am declaring my double major in psychology and English this Fall semester. I am a tutor at the Writing Center provided by UIC. People come into the Writing Center with papers or prompts, and I am always eager to help them. I have taken three English courses here at UIC.
