About Carlos

I've been tutoring and teaching middle school through adult learners for 10+ years. I have a Bachelor's in Public Policy Studies from the University of Chicago and I was instructed with the Little Red Schoolhouse writing method for Academic and Professional Writing. I also hold a Master's Degree in Public Policy Studies and Finance from the University of Chicago. My students have experienced dramatically improved grades and scores on standardized tests such as the GED, TOEFL, SAT, and ACT.

I've been teaching at local community colleges and universities, and sometimes conduct business marketing workshops at local Chambers of Commerce. I also worked for a college test prep. company for several years part-time, with hundreds of positive reviews and many smiles!

I've received several teaching awards, including Outstanding Part-Time Faculty at a local community college due to outstanding reviews from students and other instructors. I'm very proud of that and it will show in the fun learning atmosphere that I like to create with my students.

I conduct my tutoring class in an interactive setting. Fun while learning! I recognize that students must first sharpen basic math or writing skills. I first gauge my students to quickly learn what their current skills set is. The idea is to practice with problem sets and writing samples, but also to review or learn a lesson to enhance your skills set.

I teach and review Algebra 1 and Geometry using easy-to-understand concepts, not Math book jargon. (Although I can teach that way, too, I don't find it necessary!) This means that I can teach Math in several different ways. Especially for those students struggling with GED, ACT, and SAT Math, I make it simple, with lots of practice and emphasis of enhancing core skills.

My first language is Spanish. My parents are from Mexico (I've lived in the US all my life!) I've taught Basic and Advanced Spanish, as well as Latin American literature at a local university. One time I even invited renowned professor, sociolinguist, and author Ilan Stavans (Amherst College) to my class via Skype! I'm also a professional translator and copywriter in English/Spanish.

I've taught high-level grammar at local community colleges for 10+ years. Students who have successfully completed my ESL and TOEFL courses have excelled in their college-level English classes (English 101-103, Composition, etc), and have had sufficient confidence and ability to finish their certifications and Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees.

For 10+ years, I've helped my students overcome fears of being adult learners. I emphasize basic skills and critical thinking skills necessary for the new 2014 GED and other HSE exams. Students enjoy my unique, fun learning style. I also teach all Spanish GED subjects.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you’d like to know more, set up an appointment, or engage with me in a free online 15-minute consultation so you can get to know me better. I hope to speak with you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
