About Tanya

I graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana with a bachelor's degree in Special Education. I taught at special education at the middle school level (all subject areas), and have experience working with students with various learning and behavioral needs. Additionally, I am trained in a variety of reading and math interventions, and can support students working on interventions at home. I am currently an elementary school assistant principal in a high-performing district. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me the opportunity to teach! I am comfortable tutoring the following areas -- reading (elementary, middle school), math (elementary, middle school), writing (elementary, middle school), and study skills.

The focus with Common Core is really not the final answer, but rather, the process of getting there! The goal is to develop a deep understanding of math and create a toolbox of strategies that can be applied to a variety of problems. My teaching approach is focus on guided math, which models the internal math dialog students should have when solving problems and focusing on developing number sense.

Reading is a skill with multiple components -- phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The key to improving a student's reading skills is to help identify where the breakdown is occurring and provide support directed to that skill. For example, if a child struggles with sounding out words, it becomes challenging to make meaning from them! So, the immediate focus is helping build decoding skills to develop fluency. Reading is essential! My ultimate goal is to help students understand the power of reading and start enjoying it!

The key to working with elementary school students, is understanding them! I currently work at an elementary school and love the age range! They're curious, eager, and full of energy! I try to always keep it positive and fun -- develop a good relationship, learn about their interests, and use frequent positive reinforcement.

In regard to study skills, they must be explicitly taught in a similar way to academics! Students need explanations and practice with time management, organization, initiating and completing task, etc.

Students with ADD/ADHD need a learning environment that addresses their needs. This includes a multi-sensory approach to learning with movement breaks built in.

I would love to help your child reach their full potential! Please contact me to learn more and schedule lessons.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Tanya Is Tops!! — I was very impressed with Tanya and her professionalism. My daughter has a number of learning difficulties as a result of being born with a heart condition that affects her cognitive functioning. Because of this I was looking for a tutor that could understand, and had experience, in dealing with these types of students. I was not disappointed as her and my daughter clicked right away.
