About Michele

Teaching is my passion! My goal is to foster a love for learning within your kiddos by helping them realize their own potential. By creating meaningful learning opportunities that engage and inspire, students will be challenged, but not defeated.

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa with endorsements in Reading and Language Arts. I have been teaching for 7 years in the northwest suburbs and have had the opportunity to teach 2nd grade, 3rd grade, a 3rd/ 4th split class, 4th grade, and 5th grade. With this hands- on classroom experience comes a strong understanding and implementation of the common core state standards along with PARCC, MAP, and AIMSweb assessments. Continuing my education is important to me. I graduated from Concordia University with my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with English as a Second Language and Social Science endorsements.

I am generally available during the week outside of school hours from 5:00pm-9:00pm and am flexible on most weekends. I am available for in home tutoring, meeting at a local library/ coffee shop, as well as online! Please contact me with any questions or specific day/time requests. I welcome the opportunity to create lifelong learners!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have taught grades 2-5 in a well known district in Downers Grove. During this time I have been asked to join the report card committee to align Common Core state standards to our report card. I have also had experience creating, implementing, assessing, and modifying assessment that follow the Common Core standards on a daily basis and across all subject areas in my classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary education teacher for seven years at a well known district in Downers Grove. In that time I have taught 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 3/4th split, 4th grade, and 5th grade. I have endorsements in Reading, Language Arts, Social Science, and ESL. I have a master's in Curriculum and Instruction.

Handwriting

I have taught elementary aged students how to write neatly with nice penmanship and handwriting. I also work on calligraphy at home, addressing envelopes and creating signs with beautiful handwriting.

Homeschool

I am more than willing to help home schooled students with their academics. Coming from a traditional school background of experience I will be bringing with me a multitude of resources to best fit these kids. I have helped my three nieces and nephews develop as learners as they grew up from birth in order to be successful in the school setting.

Phonics

When I taught 2nd and 3rd grade I focused on phonics along with best reading practices. Daily, I would lead a phonics intervention group (RAP- reading and phonics) to struggling readers to improve their phonics. As I taught in 4th and 5th grade phonics was primarily addressed with struggling readers.

Study Skills

I have taught grades 2-5 the best study skills for formative and summative assessments. I designed an intervention plan for students struggling with study skills for my school. We have talked about how often to study, when, where, prioritized, made a schedule/ to do list, found a safe spot, and much more. I also taught techniques that work best such as flashcards, mnemonic devices, notes, pictures, and so on.
