About Amanda

I am a recent UIC graduate with an English major and minor in political science. I love tutoring and have been working as a tutor since high school. My two favorite subjects to tutor are English and Math. I enjoy my job and I love watching my students excel in their classes and understand the material better. I try to have a friendly relationship with my students but I do hold them to high standards because I believe they have the potential to meet them. I have tutored students of various ages and different levels and it's always thrilling to see how far they go. I started out as a volunteer tutor at Lincoln middle school and I have been tutoring since.

I was on speech team in high school and college and I would love to help with any public speaking or presentation projects. I have experience in acting as well which helps to engage the students when discussing Shakespeare or any kind of literature. My teaching style usually depends on the student's learning strengths. This means that if a student learns using visuals, I try to incorporate pictures and drawing as much as possible. If a student enjoys to learn in a story like form then I explain the material in a coherent order that follows a story pattern. I am very patient and I do not mind re-explaining things however many times my student needs until he gets it. However, I do expect hard work and I expect the homework I assign to be done on time except if there are excruciating circumstances. Usually if my student pays attention, asks a lot of questions and does the homework I assign, they improve quiet fast and excel in their classes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I was born in the US but went to school in Egypt from pre-K through 9th grade. I had the highest marks in Arabic every single year. I participated in Arabic poetry contests and got first place two years in a row. Then I worked at ISNS Arabic school for two years. I am currently teaching an Arabic summer camp at ISNS as well as a volunteer translator at O'hare international airport working with incoming Arabs and pro-bono attorneys who are there to help.
