About Edgar

Edgar studied guitar at Harper College under the tutelage of both, Mr. Steven Vazquez and Steven Suvada. He was part of the guitar ensemble for two years. During this time period he had the opportunity to participate in at least two mid-American guitar festivals in southern Illinois. He has participated in guitar master classes with the Waller and Maxwell Duo (NW), Sergio and Oddair Assad, Maestro Arley Otálvaro and others. After graduating from William Rainey Harper College, he continued his guitar studies at Northeastern Illinois University where he was also a member of the Guitar Ensemble for a year. He graduated with honors from NEIU where he obtained a double major degree and certification in Secondary Education and foreign languages as well as a minor degree in Latin American studies. He recently obtained English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching certification from National Louis University (NLU), which enabled him to become an ESL teacher for School District 211. His guitar repertoire’s basis is mainly that of Latin American descent, Rock, R & B among others. His favorite composers for guitar music are Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Antonio Lauro, Alirio Díaz, Manuel Ponce De Leon among many others. His varied repertoire in terms of styles and genres has given him the opportunity to appear in different venues such as, “The Hot House”, “First Presbyterian Church” (Ravenswood), “Congress Theater," “V-Live," “Aragon Ballroom," “Oakton Community College," “Martyrs," “Casa Michoacán," “Décima Musa," “Daily Plaza," “Dirty Nellies," “La casa del canto,” (México City), “Plaza de las ranas” (Puebla, México), “La Boom (NY)” and “Ninety Miles” (Havana, Cuba) among others. His T.V. and radio appearances include 1200 and 950 am, enredat (i-net radio), TV Azteca América, where he performed his original compositions. Other appearances include numerous recitals at WRHC, NEIU, De Paul University, and Elmhurst College. In addition to enjoying the fields of reading, mathematics, and history Edgar has greatly enjoyed sharing stages with “El Tri, Liran’Roll, Luis álvarez (Haragan & Cia), Alfonso Maya, Arturo Mesa, Heavy Nopal, María Fatal (L.A), Mr. Blotto” and “The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet” (LAGQ) among others. He has had the privilege of working with Chicago guitar virtuosos like Steven Vázquez and Maestro Arley Otálvaro such as is the case of “Flores en Hielo” (Latin American Folklore) and the rock band “Año Cero”. He is currently a part of the José Pepe Cornier Band (Pre-Grammy nominee), in which he has an opportunity to perform around the Chicagoland area. After teaching guitar at Harper College for seven years he joined “MSJD-Plaza Comunitaria-Educación para avanzar” in order to lead a guitar program, which is now available to all, children, teens and adults. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
