About James

I was not the best student growing up but I leaned on my teachers and listened to their directive "don't ever give up". After high school I decided to be a teacher and try to give back to an institution that gave so much to me. I taught mostly middle school age children in my 28 years as a teacher. I was a part of some great things our education system has started. While teaching career was in full swing, I also inspired my own son and daughter in their education. My son will graduate from college in the spring and my daughter starts her collegiate career in January. I shifted my career goals toward Logistics and the Supply chain by working part-time at Uber.com and Amazon.com and continuing my Teaching Career Working for Wyzant.com.

I began teaching math as it was taught to me back in the 80's and have since began the slow transition from teaching math examples to teach how the mathematics works and how it makes sense. It does! Math itself is a dynamic language with defined vocabulary, and scripted procedures and math practices. Math practices such as the common core and inquiry based student centered mathematics put mathematics at an ultra new paradigm. Promotion of equity for all, be it for ELLs, IEPs or students with a lower than adequate mathematical growth mindset has to be demanded by all parties involved.

I promise to show you how to ROCK in math, like you've never experienced before.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been teaching or tutoring Algebra since I was in high school. I graduated high school in 1988.

I pride myself as a tutor who uses many strategies such as eliciting a script to reinforce steps for successful problem solving.

Usage of math manipulatives, games, projects, extended practice, and you tube videos to reinforce direct instruction.

Elementary Math

Our elementary school years are the places where our growth mindset, and math mindset become the pictures in our head in our own "Quality World." When these paradigms fail to show up for whatever reason... this is where a parent, teacher or even a Wyzant Tutor can do whatever is necessary to return this child back the right track in the child's Quality World. Whether it be with the early activities in pre-K and kindergarten, or the 1st- 6th vocabularies, explanations, non-linguistic representation, algorithms, math practices and problem solving strategies, Math makes sense and can be learned by all student in due time.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra has been utilized for many reasons. In different iterations it can be used in middle school to give a child an extra year of math before attending high school algebra. It can be used in high school to give a child two years of High School math before Geometry and Algebra II.

I have been teaching or tutoring Prealgebra since I was in high school. I graduated high school in 1988. I pride myself as a tutor who uses many strategies such as eliciting a script to reinforce steps for successful problem solving.

While tutoring I use math manipulatives, games, projects, extended practice, and you tube videos to reinforce direct instruction.
