About Rebecca

I worked as a bilingual/ESL teacher in different content areas for the first 5 years of my career. I worked with students of all different proficiencies in gaining both language proficiency and content proficiency. I have co-taught in math classes and taught sheltered English classes and Social studies classes.

In my current role as a Bilingual counselor, I teach guidance classes that help adolescents navigate the teenage years in order to contribute to their academic and social success. I work with students who struggle with organization skills in order to help them be successful. Along with my colleagues, we have found that when students are organized and have an established system, significant gains are seen in their academic performance.

I have taught English to students of all different proficiency levels. I have worked with students who have recently arrived in the country and students who are struggling with academic vocabulary.

I am a certified Spanish/Bilingual teacher. In the past, my sheltered classes have been taught in both Spanish and English.

I majored in Social Science as part of my undergraduate program. I truly have such a love for the social sciences and have developed a strong admiration of it through my teaching to students who are new to the country.

Please contact me with questions and concerns. I look forward to the opportunity to working with students and their families because education is a team effort!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students of all ages. While I was completing both my undergraduate and graduate degree, I volunteered as a tutor at local elementary schools to help students for after school programs. I specifically worked with students who struggled with reading and were also learning English.

Elementary Math

I have previous experience in tutoring students in math at both the elementary level and the middle school level. I have taught a summer intervention class in which elementary math was taught to middle school students with interrupted education.

Reading

As an ELL and bilingual teacher I have worked with students of all different reading abilities. Some of my students start my class with only foundational reading skills in their native language, and it is my job to build upon those skills and help them transfer skills to English.

In reading, I work with student in learning high frequency/ sight words, reading comprehension, fluency and building a higher level of confidence. This can mean helping students find a book that they actually enjoy and that is at their level.

Social Studies

My major in college was Social science. I focused not only in history, but also in political science, sociology and psychology. As a social studies teacher, I worked to embed these different branches of social science in my lessons.

Sociology

I studied sociology as part of my undergraduate program. As part of my program, I studied under a professor of sociology whose focus was the medical system of Cuba and Venezuela. I had the opportunity to study and travel to Venezuela to see firsthand the societal impacts of a social and communist government.

Study Skills

As a counselor, part of my responsibilities is to help students stay organized. Our school has a school-wide organization system in place. However, if a student is struggling to use this system, I work with them to make changes to the system in order to help them be successful.

Knowledgeable and positive thinking!

Rebecca has been an INCREDIBLE tutor for our son. She challenges him in a way that he does not get frustrated and tries to quit. She also is so flexible in his teachers suggestions of things to work on. I love that she allows me total visibility into what they are working on each day. We will continue to work with her for as long as she is available!
