Hello! My name is Garrett and I'm a math teacher and tutor. I specialize in online learning, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to help others understand mathematics through the digital format on Wyzant. I have a wealth of experience teaching common high school and college subjects including Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. If you’re looking for an experienced online math tutor who genuinely wants to help students succeed in mathematics, then look no further! At the bottom of this free response I have listed my accolades and accomplishments for those interested, but I want to first explain how I can (and can’t) help you!

My focus during math lessons is on student understanding of the key concepts/ideas, and on pushing students to use the key ideas to solve problems. I do this by identifying student weaknesses and filling in any gaps in their understanding. Then I give the student an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned with a new but related problem. I have found that this method of tutoring is highly effective for ALL students who buy into the process, including students from various mathematical backgrounds. It is my expectation that my students actively participate and take ownership of their learning.

What I do not do is sit and lecture for the entirety of a lesson. Direct instruction is necessary at times, but from my experience I find that students get the most out of sessions when it is more of a discussion rather than a lecture. I also don’t complete assignments for students—though I am always willing to help students on individual questions when appropriate.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is fundamentally about solving equations by leveraging ideas from arithmetic. I have a wealth of experience helping students or all levels--from pre-algebra through calculus--hone their algebra skills through online lessons. With my students, I focus on building both knowledge and confidence to help them learn how to solve problems.
Calculus,

Calculus

As a graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to teach three semesters of calculus under the direction of multiple Math professors. Weekly calculus tutoring, both in person and online, was also one of my duties as a TA. In my last semester as a graduate student, I was given the opportunity to teach my own calculus course at U of I using a hybrid instruction model (i.e. I taught students both in person and remotely simultaneously).
Geometry,

Geometry

While earning my Math degree, I took an upper division proof based math class class focusing on Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometries. Since completing my degree, I have been tutoring students of various backgrounds on the theory and application of the topics of shape, proportion, and transformation, as well as basic proofs of common geometric theorems.

Great rapport and confidence building!

Garrett has been amazing --not only at explaining all of the concepts --but also at building a good relationship with my kid and improving their confidence in and around math.

Very dependable and knowledgeable teacher

Always helps me to prepare my tests and clears all my doubts for my tests in school. Very patient and very easy to schedule classes when ever I want them with little notice.

So helpful!

Once again, a super helpful lesson! I appreciate him going above and beyond to ensure that I understand the meaning of what I’m working on so that I am able to think logically through problems instead of purely relying on the memorization of steps to solve a problem. Thank you!

Amazing Pre-Calc Tutor

We reached out to Garrett to see if he could help our daughter who was struggling with some pre-calc concepts. Garrett was amazing - in just two sessions he was able to help her significantly. The end result was a 97 on her very next exam which boosted her grade 7 points! We are very pleased with Garrett and grateful for the time he spent helping us.

So helpful!

I liked the style of tutoring! He helped me get on the right path so that I could use my existing knowledge to solve the problem on my own. If I ever got stuck, he was prepared to help and solidify my understanding. Will definitely come back the next time I need assistance!
