Bio

My first year of teaching was at an elementary school (K-8) in Ely, Nevada. Having grown up in Spokane, this was not only a lonely move but a “treeless” one. So I returned the next year to Spokane and worked first as a Library Clerk in District #81 and then as a full-time librarian for ten years at a middle school. In 1986 I replaced the librarian at Central Valley. Over the next few years I helped bring the internet to CV in the form of computer labs that weren’t connected with each...

Over the next few years I helped bring the internet to CV in the form of computer labs that weren’t connected with each other but were connected to the outside world. When the debate coach decided she was burned out on teaching debate, I took the debate program with only my high school debate experience to lead the way. I retired briefly the year I had my daughter but other than that I’ve been either the head coach or the assistant coach from then until retirement. At one point I even coached both U-High and CV as a joint team with students coming from U-High to CV for their sixth period class! When we moved to the new building I asked to resign the library position in favor of a permanent teaching position and have never regretted doing that. Believe it or not I LIKE reading and grading papers! I’ve had the pleasure of coaching many state champions and one 16th place National Champion Policy team. The team has twice been Academic State champions. One of the achievements I am most proud of is the fact that at least six of my former debaters became debate coaches themselves.

Several years ago my husband and I chose to buy property and build a home in North Idaho. Because of financial circumstances I continued to work in Washington as a teacher while my husband finished the house and schooled our daughter through the Idaho Virtual Academy. When my daughter joined me at the high school where I taught, my husband was free to seek a full-time job bringing our finances to the point where I could retire as of June 2012 and stop driving snowy roads from our isolated house in Sandpoint to Spokane, Washington!

As an English teacher in the Central Valley School District for ten years, I was involved in teaching English to all four grades (9-12). The days I liked most when I was working were those days when I could set students on a writing task and then call students to my desk to work with individually. The rewards of being able to work one-on-one are what encouraged me to volunteer at the local library tutoring four students in English one day a week.

As a teacher of 37 years I have been exposed to a variety of learning strategies all of which can be adapted to work well in an online environment. I am a strong advocate for teaching to students’ individual learning styles: auditory, verbal and kinesthetic. Currently I am involved with four students ranging from sophomore to adult who are experiencing difficult in reading and organizing their writing.

I taught a class for 10 years called Writing and Research for college. One of the first things I emphasized for success in college was appropriate study skills. In all of my classes I encouraged the use of planners and posted my assignments electronically so that students had adequate time to prepare. I also did progress checks to determine who was falling behind in assignments and reviewed the material for tests, as well as posting a review sheet of possible questions prior to the actual test.
