About K.J.

Bio

I was a graduate student in Psychology for four years, where I taught students in large class rooms and discussion-like settings. People have unique backgrounds, motivations, and skills - all of which are important for learning new information. It's hard to take advantage of a person's unique situation in a classroom setting. I believe 1-on-1 tutoring is the best way for curious students to learn new material.

During my time in graduate school, I was a teacher's assistant for classes in psychology, research methods, and linguistics. I also taught and developed a lesson plan for an Intro to Linguistics course. I helped dozens of students, in a one-on-one setting, with the material of these subjects. In my class and my study sessions, I placed special emphasis on the nature of learning and strategies for coming to know. For example, I stressed the importance of knowing your motivation in regards to the subject matter, and I stressed giving numerous examples and non-examples of a concept you are struggling to understand. I like for my students to know why they are interested in what they are studying, and for them to make the knowledge as relevant and concrete as possible.

Linguistics

I taught and designed an Intro to Linguistics course at the college level. I was a teaching assistant for Intro to Linguistics for six semesters while I was in graduate school. I was also a teaching assistant for a Psychology of Language class and a Language Acquisition class. I've taken classes in Semantics, the Evolution of Language, and Language acquisition. My graduate research concerned pragmatics - a branch of linguistics - which deals with the all the social and psychological factors that affect communication and language production/comprehension.

Logic is the most important discipline in academics, because knowledge here underlies all other knowledge. I've completed courses in Logic and semantics during the course of my education. I've surveyed a handful Logic textbooks, my favorite being The Art of Reasoning by David Kelley.

ADHD

I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Psychology. I've worked at three separate inpatient, treatment centers for a total of almost three years. Two of them focused on dual-diagnosis, and one of them was an adolescent facility where many of the clients had been diagnosed with ADHD. At this facility, I ran groups on Self-Esteem, Relapse Prevention, and SMART goals. I constantly talked with ADHD clients about their ADHD, and worked with them to better focus during school time and groups.
