Bio

I was a licensed teacher in the state of Oregon. I hold a Masters Degree in Special Education and have taught in the public schools for 20+ years. I opened my own tutoring center in 2005 in my community to help serve students that needed additional help with the basics. I was a member of the National Tutoring Association from 2005-2010 where I was also a presenter at their annual conferences. I was a member of the National Tutoring Association from 2005-2010 where I was also a presenter at their annual conferences. In 2006, the NTA offered me a book deal and published Tutoring Outside The Box, a guide for working with students having special needs. I have my own curriculum that students really like. My area of expertise is reading, writing, spelling and math for students grades 1-5. As a former special education teacher, I have many years of experience with IEP'S, behavior plans, functional behavior assessments, standardized assessments, modifications, and data collection.

I have taught students that have issues with dysgraphia and received training from physical therapists. Depending on the need, I can teach children how to properly hold a pencil using different types of grasps and keyboard skills.

Reading

Students in grades K-5 need to have a firm understanding of phonics and the rules of reading. Reading at a rate of 10 words per minute means little if the student has no comprehension skills. This is the very foundation of becoming a good reader. I use Direct Instruction programs to introduce the basics and weekly probes to determine mastery before introducing the next step. I have had training and certified in Reading Mastery Curriculum.

Special Needs

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

For those kids on the spectrum, the most important subjects they need to know in order to be more independent is; life skills (hygiene, cooking, cleaning, shopping, menu planning, reading a bus schedule, money management, etc) Behavior management (controlling their temper, using positive coping skills, etc) and Social Skills (wait your turn, hands to self, quiet voice, etc) This is what I do.

Special Needs

Learning a subject takes time and practice. Every person learns at a different rates, style and method. Education is not a one size fits all. Success comes from teaching to mastery, not just exposing the concept for 3 weeks and then move on. I was born to be a teacher and I'm good at getting to the real problem and help my student resolve it. I don't just give them the answer. I used the Direct Instruction Methodology because it works. I have seen more success with DI programs than anything the public schools teach. I believe in it and I'm passionate about it.
