About Kayla

I have always enjoyed teaching, as I have taught horseback riding lessons since the age of 12. This love of teaching transitioned over into my athletics during high school when I would coach softball and soccer, and eventually into academics during college when I would teach lectures to freshman all the way up to seniors. Because I have been teaching for so long, I have a vast array of techniques that I use to customize a teaching style for each student. I began to teach in order to save money for college, and was able to pay for my own college so I am aware of what hard work is, and what it takes to achieve your goals academically and professionally.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, so I am certainly partial to teaching all aspects of biology. I enjoy and have experience teaching botany, ecology, zoology, genetics, and general science. I have also tutored students in chemistry, physics, pre-algebra, algebra, ACT preparation, and reading comprehension. I have experienced extensive testing in each subject, and because of this I know and can prepare the students for the tests. This does not mean that I will teach to the test. My goal is to have the student understand the material and have the ability to apply the concepts to every situation possible. I believe the best way to solve a problem is not to memorize the correct steps, but rather to understand why the wrong steps will not work. This enables the student to learn to think through any problem they come across.

I have a great understanding of math, and will work patiently with each student to help them understand the material. I was a member of Honor Roll, Anchor Club, and the Physics Club all through high school, and have been a member of MENSA for over ten years. I emphasize the philosophy of understanding the concept rather the memorizing the steps in order to establish a habit of independent thinking for the student.

I have a B.S. in Biology, with a minor in Neuroscience so I have an above-average understanding of the biological sciences. I earned a perfect score on my state's biology exam, and also above a 30 on the science section of the ACT. I treat biology as an entire concept, and teach the students why the wrong answer will not work, as well as why the correct answers will. This enables them to acquire and strengthen their critical thinking skills, which will ultimately help them in any problem-solving situation for any subject.

Currently I am available for tutoring every day of the week, though I work part-time. I like to use the Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Pembroke Crossings Plaza or the one in the Broward Mall on University Drive to tutor because if there are any additional materials the student or I might need to solidify a concept it is at our fingertips, though the bookstore's hours are Monday-Saturday 10 am to 10 pm and Sunday 11 am to 9 pm. I am located 15 miles away, so ahead of time scheduling is important to me. Also, the first few sessions will need to take place at this location for safety precautions for both myself and you or your child. I believe it is better to be safe than sorry.

I hope you will reach out to me to help you or your student achieve their goals, and I am so eagerly looking forward to it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ecology

I have taken several ecology courses pertaining to insect ecology, general ecology, and wildlife ecology. I earned A's in all of these courses. I am currently working toward my M.S. in Biology working with insects.

Public Speaking

I did very well in Speech and Debate in high school. I have presented many research papers and projects throughout college and have received awards for best presentation on multiple occasions. I have given speeches to adult audiences of hundreds, as well as audiences as young as 8 years old. I am presenting at the Tri-Beta Symposium in Jackson MS in February on my past research and also at the MS Academy of Sciences for another research project I completed. I am very confident in speaking to any audience, and very able to communicate techniques on how to become a confident and effective speaker.

Great tutor

Kayla is a great tutor! She just started to work with my child and he really likes how she makes everything "clear to understand" She is not only helping him to go over material but teaches organisational and study skills.
