About Jeff

Graphic design can change your life. I know, because it changed mine. Nearly 20 years ago, I was uhappily stuck in an uncreative, unfulfilling career (banking), unsure how to turn my life-long obsession with appearances into something that paid the bills. Fate stepped in when I was laid off from my banking job (thanks, Bank!) and was given a generous severance package. Included was money for re-training. I immediately ran to nearby training center, and enrolled in as many Adobe classes as I could afford. In quick succession, I learned Illustrator, Photoshop, and—most importantly to me—InDesign. That decision paved the way for a fulfilling career that I love.

I have been able to pass my passion for graphic design and the Adobe Creative Suite on to the dozens of students I've tutored and taught over the years. My first job (following a wonderful stint as a freelance graphic artist) was as the director of publications for my college alma mater. During my tenure, I had the chance to create hundreds of posters, flyers, booklets, books, signs—you name it, I probably designed it. And, in that role, I was also the school's yearbook advisor. I taught dozens of college students the basics of InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator each summer during "Mr. A.'s Yearbook Boot Camp," a week-long training session that was as much fun as it was arduous. During this time I also tutored many adults (I advertised on Craigslist), turning some into professional graphic artists, and made others more competent at their current jobs. I am currently in charge of graphic design for Idaho State University's student union. I supervise the work of six or more student workers, often through one-on-one tutoring sessions.

You'll find me to be a patient and passionate teacher/tutor. I have been using Macintosh computers exclusively since 1987, and am extremely familiar with the features and quirks that make them so much fun to use. Studying with me, you'll find that I'm a big proponent of hot keys and shortcuts; I'll teach you how to make the most of your time on the computer.

I am, if anything, even more passionate about Adobe InDesign. I think it's the single greatest program ever developed in the history of mankind. I do everything in InDesign: basic websites, book layout, résumés, to-do lists. If it needs done, InDesign can do it!

Like you, perhaps, I am an essentially self-taught graphic artist. I have always recognized my ability to know when something—anything!—was poorly designed, but wasn't always sure how to make corrections that helped. Getting proper instructions in the applications is the first start, and an obvious one. But you also need someone with real-word experience. I have been designing for nearly 20 years now, as a freelancer for several years, and for the past 15 years for colleges and universities. I know what good design looks like; I can help you identify it, so you can replicate it.

I've been where you are right now, friend. If you're motivated, excited, and ready to get going, I'm ready to be your learning conduit. I promise you'll learn more than you ever thought possible, very quickly. Between the two of us, we'll have you designing in no time!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I began using Adobe InDesign when it was still a beta release, in 1999.

Pagemaker was my layout program of choice when I began doing graphic design, but it was unstable, and had a limited set of features. I quickly saw the superiority offered by InDesign, and taught myself how to use it.

Over the years I've taught dozens of others its use, both in large- and small-group settings, but especially in one-on-one tutoring sessions.

Many of the students I taught went on to use InDesign to further their business and professional goals.

One opened his own business, publishing books that he layed out himself.

Another was able to join her family's small newpaper business, taking over the weekly layout of the their publication.

I excel at tutoring motivated students in the use of Adobe InDesign.

Desktop Publishing

Because I am a self-taught graphic artist I understand the importance of good, on-going training and tutoring.

I've taught many individuals the basics (and beyond) of desktop publishing.

As director of creative services and yearbook advisor at Florida College, I had the opportunity to instruct dozens of yearbook students about the principles of PARC: proximity, alignment, repetition and contrast.

I use these four elements in all of my one-on-one and group training, and in my current role at Idaho State University, where I manage the desktop publishing work of six student workers.

Macintosh

I've been using Macintosh computers exclusively since 1987. In subsequent years, I have had the opportunity to …

For nearly 10 years, while serving as director of publications and yearbook advisor at Florida College, I was the administrator for more than 10 Macintosh computers. Each fall, I taught a Mac "boot camp" for incoming yearbook students, aimed at those who had yet to use an Apple computer. Some of these boot camps had 30 students or more. I also provided one-on-one tutoring for those students who were unable to learn in the large-group setting.

I am currently the graphic design coordinator for Idaho State University's student union. In this role, I keep seven Macs up and running, and teach student workers how to best make use of their unique features.
