About Michael

I am 33 years old, and I am a passionate mathematician and scientist. I received a bachelor of science in both mathematics and physics, and I finished a graduate degree in physics.

It is my desire to change the perspective of math and science in my community and my country. To that end I am a science enthusiast and active mathematics and science instructor. In my community, I've logged over thousands of hours teaching and tutoring math and science courses in the last 8 years both professionally and as a hobby. As a college student, with a double major in math and science, I found I was good enough at explaining ideas that I could make a living teaching so I took a job with Tutor.com.

Later, I was hired at Idaho State University's Student Success Center and it was here that I was responsible for helping student athletes maintain a high GPA and eligibility in their activities. After I had gained enough experience I opened my own small tutoring business called Rational Tutoring and taught over hundreds of students in remedial math up through calculus and advanced science courses. I kept that business running until I finished my graduate work and started a teaching job with Highland Senior High School in Pocatello, ID. While there, I served as an after school tutor for two years. Recognizing my talent for success, Idaho State University hired me as a mathematics instructor for the College of Technology where I now teach preparatory and advanced math courses.

In total, I have spent over 8 years in various teaching and tutoring capacities. My goal and teaching philosophy is not just to help students get through their curriculum but to spend enough time making sure they grasp and appreciate the material. We need a society full of passionate young math and science enthusiasts. Without science, there is no progress!

If you want to schedule a lesson with me please send me a message. I'm sure you'll be happy to work with me and find great success in doing so!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

During my undergraduate coursework in physics at Idaho State University and Brigham Young University-Idaho I was required to utilize techniques from differential equations in solving complex problems. I have taken at least four higher division physics courses which require some knowledge in differential equations, including but not limited to: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Thermal/Statistical Physics. In addition to that coursework I finished the respective course for Ordinary Differential Equations with an A. I am currently taking a similar course at Idaho State University which will hopefully enhance my understanding of the proofs for theorems and so forth.
I am confident that my experience in this difficult subject will come to avail those who seek help in this complex subject. While I can tutor for ordinary differential equations I cannot claim too much experience with partial differential equations.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is a subject that has a wide range of applications. My experience in linear algebra has allowed me to master some of the most interesting topics in mathematics as well as some of the basic tools we use everyday in algebra. I have had at least two full semesters of detailed coursework in linear algebra; one basic course, and the other a more advanced proof writing course. I have also had at least 3 years of exposure to applications in linear algebra, mostly with respect to physics. With my knowledge and experience in linear algebra, you can be sure to understand and master some useful techniques in logic, engineering, electronics, and much more.

Logic

I am a graduate of mathematics and physics. Logic is the name of the game for my profession. I also teach a course for my university in logic called Math in Modern Society. I believe engaging students in this subject is of vital importance to their success and I do so by use of the EDGE method (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable).

Physical Science

As a high school teacher I taught two years of both regular sections and honors sections of physical science. I was recognized by the principal as innovative and highly effective, increasing the annual scores for all students. My advanced education is in physics and mathematics and I am highly qualified to instruct students in this content area.
