I started teaching right out of college-middle school Art and English. I took a break to raise my family and taught my own childen for five years at home. My next endeavor was to coordinate and instruct in a college literacy program for 7 years, teaching adults to read! Out of necessity I returned to teaching art, reading and English in public school.
What did all of this experience teach me? That I really love teaching one-on-one and it is the single most effective way to teach someone what they need to know. I have taught 4 year olds and 40 year olds to read and write. I've taught students who didn't think they could draw a stick man to do realistic drawings and paintings. I strive to challenge each individual student to reach their full potential and am a great motivator.
My graduate degree is in education with an emphasis in reading but my passion is in writing and all goes with it. I believe being good at both is very important to student success. I currently write creative nonfiction and have just recently been published!
My undergrad degree was in art education. Experience with talented students and those who could draw nothing taught me to be a good art teacher.
I keep a flexible schedule and will work with students to best suit them. I prefer to meet face to face but will consider on-line tutoring if necessary. Base rate $40 an hour to start. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in Art from the University of Idaho and have taught art in four public high schools for a total of 20 years. I have taught private lessons and paint watercolors in my spare time.
