Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a B. A. degree in music from Portland State U., and also have an M.M. in piano pedagogy and an M.A. in music history from Arizona State U., and a Ph.D. in musicology from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA. My grades were always outstanding for ear training. I believe I am very well qualified to tutor ear training. I use ear training exercises when I teach piano lessons.

General Music

I have a master's degree in music history and a Ph.D. in musicology. I also have a master's degree in piano pedagogy. I have taught piano lessons for many years. I have had coursework in music composition and theory and am familiar with orchestration. I am well-qualified to teach general music.

Music History

I have a master of Arts degree in music history from Arizona State U. and a Ph.D. in musicology from Claremont Graduate University. I had a graduate assistantship where I assisted in the teaching of music history classes at the college level. I believe I am fully qualified to teach or tutor music history.

Piano

I have a master's degree in music in piano pedagogy, which is the art of teaching private piano lessons. I have taught private piano lessons for over 15 years. I am fully qualified to teach piano lessons at any level. I have experience teaching preschoolers to adult-aged students.

Public Speaking

I believe I am qualified to provide tutoring in public speaking because of my training and speaking experience. I have successfully completed the Toastmaster's International courses for both the CTM (Competent Toastmaster) and ATM (Able Toastmaster). I was on the board in our Toastmaster's club and served as president, which entailed conducting the Toastmaster general meetings and board meetings. The requirements for the CTM and ATM designations include speech presentations of various types, some of which involve the use of visual aids and A/V equipment. All speeches are timed and formally evaluated. I in turn also evaluated other speakers in the club. Aspects of public speaking in these evaluations included the speaker's body language, use of microphones and visual aids, timing, eye contact, and use of the voice, as well as comments on the content and organization of the speech itself. In addition to participating in Toastmasters, I have given several public presentations, including lecture-demonstrations on musical subjects as well as several presentations of papers at academic conferences. I have also served as president and ran the weekly meeting for a social organization. I feel confident and comfortable when speaking in public, and have the skills and training to tutor anyone who wants to improve his or her public speaking abilities.

Sight Singing

I have a B. A. degree in music from Portland State U., and also have an M.M. in piano pedagogy and an M.A. in music history from Arizona State U., and a Ph.D. in musicology from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA. My grades were always outstanding in sight singing. I have sung in numerous choirs throughout high school and college. I started an amateur choral group in Phoenix, AZ, which I directed, wherein I taught the chorale members to sing their vocal parts using sight-singing skills I learned in college. I have had private and group voice lessons and am an accomplished sight-singer. I believe I am very well qualified to tutor ear training. I also use sight singing exercises when I teach piano lessons.
