About Jasmine

I am a creative, hard-working, reflective and proficient educator who loves teaching English language learners of all ages. I hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Education from the College of Education at the University of Idaho in U.S. and a Master of Arts (M.A.) with an emphasis in teaching English to speakers of other language (TESOL) from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at Chaoyang University of Technology in Taichung, Taiwan. While studying for my master’s and bachelor’s degrees, I passed the Teacher Certification Examinations and have been registered as a qualified teacher of general subject for Kindergarten and English subject for Secondary School and Junior High School by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan.

I am passionate about working with both English language learners and educators from different countries, as evidenced by my work history. At the university level, I co-taught an MA TESL undergraduate and graduate course titled “ESL methods”. This course focused on exposing the graduates and undergraduate students to the theories and methods of teaching reading, writing and English for special purposes. Also, I was a teacher-training instructor in Teaching Culturally Diverse Learners course for the undergraduate students in the College of Education at the University of Idaho. As an English language instructor, I have experience teaching ESL learners at two intensive English for Academic Purposes programs in Idaho State since 2012 as well as EFL students in grades 3-11 in Taiwan for approximately six years. These experiences, paired with my education, have provided me with a deep understanding of Academic English and English for Academic Purposes curriculum development and design, knowledge of applied linguistics and syntax, knowledge of various teaching methods and strategies, and a strong background in teaching English language learners from basic skills to college-level coursework.

Teaching is my life. I have been told that I am a “born teacher,” but this is not the case. If anything, I was born a learner, and along the way I learned how to teach. In fact, my teaching style and techniques are evolving daily as I learn through professional development, by collaborating with my colleagues, and most importantly by communicating with my students. To me, an important part of teaching is figuring out how people learn. I am passionate about education because I am a constant learner myself.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I am a native Chinese speaker and I have been teaching English language for approximately 10 years. Although my focus is teaching English language, I know how to use student-centered activities and interactive approaches while teaching Chinese. Also, I have teaching certificate from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL and EFL students in the US and Taiwan for approximately 10 years. I also hold a master's degree with an emphasis on TESOL. I use student-centered activities and interactive approaches in my lessons, so my students can have the opportunities to practice English. I also help my students to practice English in daily life.

IELTS

I have taught English as a Second Language in the US for 4 years, and I have helped my students prepare for taking IELTS exam. Thus, I believe I am able to tutor those who necessary strategies and skills while taking the exam.

Vocabulary

While preparing for TOEFL exam and GRE, I studied a variety of vocabulary words and I am able to use these words in English writing. While teaching ESL students at college level, I teach my students guess the meaning of the vocabulary words from the content, rather than translating every single word. I also teach my students to use "prefix, root, and suffix" to increase their knowledge of lexicon.

Writing

While working on my master's degree, I completed my thesis with quality writing in English. I also have experience teaching English language learners to write different styles of essays, such as comparison and contrast essay, classification essay, expository essay, persuasive essay and so forth. I always use different strategies and skills, such as brainstorming, making an outline, sharing and discussing, drafting, revising, and editing to help my students in their English writing. My students also increase confidence in their English writing skills.
