University of Idaho (English)
I have an English degree from the University of Idaho. I also am certified to teach secondary English and French. I taught English at the high school level for five years, and I taught dance for eight years. I have lots of experience teaching people of various ages and abilities. I was also a teacher's aide for a summer migrant school program, and I helped all of my two children's teachers at the elementary-school level. I tutored for two years at the University of Idaho's tutoring center.
I love learning about people and helping them find strategies which will work for them. As a former public school teacher and tutor, I learned how to present material in different ways, because we all learn differently. I can help you find ways to make the information or skills STICK and be there when you need them again later.
I've had former high school students write to tell me they found my instruction and strategies very valuable at college. I'm confident I can help you with whatever language or learning skill eludes you! I have an English degree from the University of Idaho. I also am certified to teach secondary English and French. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught nine years as a dance fitness instructor in various gyms, community centers and dance studios. I have also studied fitness research for the same amount of time, and applied it to my classes. One thing I do that is different from other fitness instructors is help you find YOUR motivation to move. It is not the same for everyone!
I worked one summer as a teacher's aide in a first-grade class. I have secondary teaching certification in English and French. I taught English for five years. In addition to the training in education I received, I also received tutor training at the University of Idaho, and learned how to evaluate a student's current level of understanding to know how to build on that understanding with the material the student is learning.
At the University of Idaho, I tutored English, French, psychology, and English as a Foreign Language. However, mostly I tutored study skills, test-taking skills, note-taking skills, and time management. Even students who had done really well in high school often needed help learning how to manage the more challenging work at college. As a university tutor, I received training on how to assess a student's current skills, and build from there.
