As a young working professional, I was looking for a new challenge and tutoring provides that challenge. I am an academic at heart. I love learning and loved school. I try to help those I tutor develop that same love for learning.
I have a diverse background and cross-sector experience which lend a unique perspective. I was able to spend a year and a half in Hong Kong, expanding my world view and language skills. My undergraduate degree is in Geography and Asian studies. I worked as an English teacher in Taiwan, which was a wonderful cultural experience and also solidified my interest in teaching/tutoring. After returning to my hometown and working in the private sector for a few years, I decided to pursue my passion for helping others and work in the public sector. In order to facilitate this, I obtained a Master's Degree in Public Administration, which included the study of government, economics, and finance. I've always had a knack for numbers, so this allowed me to use those skills for good purposes.
In addition, I am a life-long musician and love to teach piano, flute, and voice.
I also speak Cantonese and studied Mandarin in college. I would be happy to help beginning to early intermediate Chinese students learn!
Lastly, I also have quite a bit of experience in career/resume counseling and would be happy to assist in this area.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I lived and worked in Hong Kong for a year and a half, during which time I became fluent in spoken Cantonese. I also took four semesters of Mandarin in college, after which I lived in Taiwan for 6 months. I also completed a 7 week study abroad in mainland China. I would feel comfortable tutoring beginning to early intermediate Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin).
I have been playing flute since the 5th grade. I was a first chair soloist throughout middle school, high school, and college. I participated in honor bands and was awarded second place at state solo competition. I took private lessons all through high school and two years in college. I tutored fellow flutists in high school. I would feel comfortable tutoring/teaching beginning to intermediate level flutists.
I have been playing piano for over 20 years. I have played as a soloist and as also an accompanist for numerous vocal and instrumental soloists, as well as for choirs (too many to count!).
I am most familiar with the Suzuki method, although I would be happy to delve into other methods if the student is more familiar with something else.
I have been sewing since the age of ten. I have completed numerous projects in clothing construction, quilting, and home decor. I am familiar with machine and hand sewing techniques, as well as decorative embroidery. I would be happy to provide samples of my work before tutoring.
