Hello! My name is Garrett and I'm a math teacher and tutor. I specialize in online learning, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to help others understand mathematics through the digital format on Wyzant. I have a wealth of experience teaching common high school and college subjects including Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. If you’re looking for an experienced online math tutor who genuinely wants to help students succeed in mathematics, then look no further! At the bottom of this free response I have listed my accolades and accomplishments for those interested, but I want to first explain how I can (and can’t) help you!

My focus during math lessons is on student understanding of the key concepts/ideas, and on pushing students to use the key ideas to solve problems. I do this by identifying student weaknesses and filling in any gaps in their understanding. Then I give the student an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned with a new but related problem. I have found that this method of tutoring is highly effective for ALL students who buy into the process, including students from various mathematical backgrounds. It is my expectation that my students actively participate and take ownership of their learning.

What I do not do is sit and lecture for the entirety of a lesson. Direct instruction is necessary at times, but from my experience I find that students get the most out of sessions when it is more of a discussion rather than a lecture. I also don’t complete assignments for students—though I am always willing to help students on individual questions when appropriate.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 to freshman and sophomores during my internship at Rocky Mountain High School while completing my education degree. This gave me experience in curriculum design and implementation, as well as assessing and evaluating student progress in the math topics of lines, systems of equations, and basic exponential functions.
Calculus,

Calculus

As a graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to teach three semesters of calculus under the direction of multiple Math professors. Weekly calculus tutoring, both in person and online, was also one of my duties as a TA. In my last semester as a graduate student, I was given the opportunity to teach my own calculus course at U of I using a hybrid instruction model (i.e. I taught students both in person and remotely simultaneously).
Geometry,

Geometry

While earning my Math degree, I took an upper division proof based math class class focusing on Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometries. Since completing my degree, I have been tutoring students of various backgrounds on the theory and application of the topics of shape, proportion, and transformation, as well as basic proofs of common geometric theorems.

BEST algebra 2/pre-calculus/calculus tutor

Garrett is incredibly patient, calm, and knowledgable. He was able to help me solve incredibly difficult calculus problems from the rigorous course I was taking, knew when I needed a refresher in certain algebra II and pre-calculus concepts, and did all of this while keeping everything fun. Wholeheartedly recommend Garrett, and the ease with which he uses technology made me feel like this was an "in person" session the whole time. Thank you Garrett!
