I didn’t always love school. So, I understand when other students would rather be doing ANYTHING but studying! I've found that the best teachers are those who love their subjects as well as their students. I didn’t always love school. So, I understand when other students would rather be doing ANYTHING but studying! I've found that the best teachers are those who love their subjects as well as their students. I have taught and assisted teaching a variety of classes from preschool to high school and beyond in many subjects.

My greatest strength is making classwork more understandable. This came to light with a student whom I considered a “survivor” of the California school system. He had graduated essentially illiterate and was enrolled in a remedial math class at a community college. The student was completely frustrated because the instructor could not explain the material in a way he or several other students could understand. I spent each evening re-teaching what the class already covered. My student was then able to understand it and complete his assignments successfully.

As a student teacher, I worked with approximately 150 high school students every day in US and World History classes. Some are brilliant, interested and easy. Others may lack motivation or struggle to understand concepts. History is my great love. I thrive on helping my students understand not only the "big question" but also "why it matters." I help them see how history is so much more than learning about "old dead guys". It is the story of us, of where we came from and how we got to where we are today. We apply that learning to the world we live in and where we are headed. Additionally, history is about researching and writing, learning to take a stand and defend it. My students understand how to write clearly and persuasively, clearly articulating their information and reasoning.

I am a writer/freelance journalist with over 60 published articles. I have many years in public speaking. I have written four screenplays, countless short stories, and I've written and directed four stage productions. I have a BA in History with a minor in Political Science from Oregon State University and a Master of Education with the University of Idaho. A

Public Speaking

I have been in public speaking for 40 years, four of which were in competition. I have been teaching in many situations - public schools, church, community, etc, for many years. I have managed a company, trained employees, and presented military capacities to visiting foreign and US dignitaries. I also have extensive research, writing, and editing experience. I understand the fear many people have of standing in front of crowds and speaking or performing. I used to be afraid myself. It was only through preparation and LOTS of practice that I finally got over it. I can help others get past their fears as well.

Since graduating from Oregon State University, I am now in a Master's of Education program at the University of Idaho. I was a substitute teacher for over three years, mostly in elementary grades. I have been in college for five years and have maintained a 3.5+ GPA. I am consistently on the Dean's List or Honor Roll. I have earned the Waldo-Cummings Outstanding Student Award. This is not because I'm unusually brilliant. Organization, diligence and a practical approach to studying has made all the difference. I can help frustrated students achieve more by using their talents and time better. I also help the student find his/her best way to learn, embedding the material as deeply into the memory as possible.
