About Lua

My passion for teaching began over a decade ago when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I strongly believe in treating students as individuals with their own sets of needs and talents. Over the years I have encountered many students with many different learning styles so I have lots of experience developing, modifying and teaching lessons to meet the learning needs of students.

I attended the University of Colorado and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English. At the time I was tutoring children who struggled in reading through AmeriCorps and loved it so much, I decided to go straight into a Master's program for education. I have taught and tutored first and second graders in reading for over ten years. These are the crucial years when children learn how to read. While I enjoyed teaching in the classroom, I value the one-on-one learning time with the students where I felt I had the most impact. I am trained in multi-sensory approaches to reading instruction and have been to many hours of training specifically for teaching children in elementary grades how to read.

I enjoy working with your student as he or she develops confidence that accompanies achieving success in reading skills, whether it's phonics, comprehension, or even spelling! I will do a quick evaluation to gauge where your student is at and work on filling the gaps in his or her learning. When working with your child, you can expect me to set goals with him or her and determine what the reading skill gaps are. I will design lessons specifically to fill in those learning gaps in phonics, comprehension or spelling, track your student's progress and communicate that progress with you and your student often.
I look forward to meeting your student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
