Bio

I'm a professional writer and editor who graduated from Notre Dame magna cum laude in Ancient Greek with a second major in philosophy. I have hundreds of hours' experience tutoring Latin, logic (philosophy), algebra, and standardized test prep (SAT/ACT) online to students ranging from six years old to age 70+.

Formal logic can be so intimidating, and there is so little good help available for it online. Every class approaches the subject a little bit differently and that makes it very hard to find guidance. So let me be your Vergil, escorting you through the hellscape of logic translations, operators, derivations, rules of inference and replacement, nested quantifiers, truth tables, truth trees, and the like. I have taught the basics of logic to a six-year-old -- I can probably teach it to you, too.

Speaking of Vergil, I studied Latin for eight years between high school and college, and I continue to be a lifelong learner in the subject. For fun, I translate Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. I can meet you in Latin wherever you are. I have a copy of the introductory texts for nearly every major curriculum -- e.g. Ecce Romani, Latin for the New Milennium, The Oxford Latin Course, etc.

But English writing is my true area of expertise. If you've written up a draft of that big paper, then I am just the person to help proofread and polish it for you.

Please send me a message on Wyzant -- I respond quickly and I can find availability for nearly any schedule.

History

Philosophy

Philosophy

As a second philosophy major who studied logic and retained alove for this often-frustrating subject, I regularly tutor propositional and first-order logic, truth tables, natural deduction proofs. I can help you understand premises and conclusions, rules of inference and replacement, fundamental rules of deduction, quantifiers, conditional proofs, proof by contradiction, formal and informal fallacies, logical truth, consistency, etc. Starting from nothing but the fundamental intro and elim laws, I have helped students on this platform derive DeMorgan's law (all four ways), the distributive law of conjunction over disjunction and vice versa, disjunctive syllogism, the law of double negativity, the commutative law, and the tautological "A or not A." When it comes to logic, there isn't much online to go on, and the professors of this topic can be outright sadistic in what they're willing to throw at first-year students even in the first week or two of class. Let me help show you the ropes -- I promise you'll understand what's what the time we're done.

I scored a 100% on my philosophy quiz after being tutored by David!!!!!

I am so grateful that David helped me to understand formal logic. He was able to aid me within minutes of my requesting a tutor. The one thing I never told him was that I was retired military and had suffered a TBI which made comprehension for me a bit difficult. I suffer with cognitive delays frequently and it takes more time for me to understand things. He was repeating the same things to me often, but he did not give up on me. Despite this factor, David taught me how to use truth tables and gave me a better understanding of the formal logic argument types. I was really struggling in my professor's class, and he was "unfortunately" not a viable resource even when asking for his assistance during his office hours. I had a 61.2 in his class and several other students were failing as well. It did not seem to bother my professor in the least bit which was alarming to me. I had already actually reached out to the tutoring center on campus and got a philosophy tutor who was not proficient in 102 but was trying to assist me as she was the President of the Philosophy Honors Society. My professor's selected arguments were even too tricky for her, and she gave me the wrong information for the first test in his class. I had completely forgotten about Wyzant as a resource, but I am so grateful for it now! Before my tutoring session with David ended, he instructed me to really take the time and re-work all of the problems he and I had completed together. I did just that and scored a 100% on the quiz a day later. David's assistance was worth every dollar spent and I hope to touch base with him again soon. He is a brilliant mind!!!! You will not be disappointed in his tutoring services!!!!

David is a great tutor!!

David has helped me with both deductive logic and semantics courses. He is fantastic. No matter what material I throw at him - even when he has never seen it before - he has always been able to tackle it and help me understand it too! If you need help with logic based material - look no further - David will go the extra mile. Also, he is very flexible with scheduling. 10/10

Fantastic Teacher

Amazing tutor. Great for intro to logic philosophy courses. He is great at simplifying the material and explaining the rules that logic is riddled with.
