Bio

I'm a professional writer and editor who graduated from Notre Dame magna cum laude in Ancient Greek with a second major in philosophy. I have hundreds of hours' experience tutoring Latin, logic (philosophy), algebra, and standardized test prep (SAT/ACT) online to students ranging from six years old to age 70+.

Formal logic can be so intimidating, and there is so little good help available for it online. Every class approaches the subject a little bit differently and that makes it very hard to find guidance. So let me be your Vergil, escorting you through the hellscape of logic translations, operators, derivations, rules of inference and replacement, nested quantifiers, truth tables, truth trees, and the like. I have taught the basics of logic to a six-year-old -- I can probably teach it to you, too.

Speaking of Vergil, I studied Latin for eight years between high school and college, and I continue to be a lifelong learner in the subject. For fun, I translate Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. I can meet you in Latin wherever you are. I have a copy of the introductory texts for nearly every major curriculum -- e.g. Ecce Romani, Latin for the New Milennium, The Oxford Latin Course, etc.

But English writing is my true area of expertise. If you've written up a draft of that big paper, then I am just the person to help proofread and polish it for you.

Please send me a message on Wyzant -- I respond quickly and I can find availability for nearly any schedule.

History

Philosophy

Philosophy

As a second philosophy major who studied logic and retained alove for this often-frustrating subject, I regularly tutor propositional and first-order logic, truth tables, natural deduction proofs. I can help you understand premises and conclusions, rules of inference and replacement, fundamental rules of deduction, quantifiers, conditional proofs, proof by contradiction, formal and informal fallacies, logical truth, consistency, etc. Starting from nothing but the fundamental intro and elim laws, I have helped students on this platform derive DeMorgan's law (all four ways), the distributive law of conjunction over disjunction and vice versa, disjunctive syllogism, the law of double negativity, the commutative law, and the tautological "A or not A." When it comes to logic, there isn't much online to go on, and the professors of this topic can be outright sadistic in what they're willing to throw at first-year students even in the first week or two of class. Let me help show you the ropes -- I promise you'll understand what's what the time we're done.

Very Helpful!

David was very helpful in helping my son understand concepts of logic. He was thorough and took the time to understand what my son was working on prior to the tutoring session. We will definitely schedule more sessions!

Amazing Latin Tutor!

David was amazing! Took his time and reviewed the 2018 National Latin Exam with very limited notice. I look forward to continuing to work with David.

Understanding and smart

He helped me with some logic problems that I was having trouble understanding. A very solid, patient and ethical tutor- but was not pretentious. You never know if a tutor will be a good fit, but for me, David was the right choice. Would recommend.

Excellent teacher

My daughters classes have been very helpful. These beneficial topics that the teacher has taught has solidified her understanding which is an amazing job making her understanding the topic she was struggling on.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

David has worked with our 7th grade son for a few months now. This is the first time our son is taking Latin. The lesson/materials covered in class moves very quickly and our son was way behind when he started working with David. David has managed to narrow the gap between where our son was and where he should be. We are confident as he continues to work with him, our son will not only reach the class level but also thrive in Latin. David has been very patient at times when our son was not focusing or retaining the materials covered. We highly recommend him!

Logic for a 6 year old

David has successfully taught our six year old the operators in logic and how they work and is now teaching her arguments with their premises and conclusions. She is picking it up quickly and her mind is expanding to be able to process logic, which is exactly what we wanted to accomplish.

Great tutor!

David taught me logic - nested quantifiers, conditional identities, de Morgan’s law, etc. I can not recommend David enough. He made me feel more confident in the material I was learning and made sure I understood each concept before moving onto the next. His great attitude and patience is a wonderful bonus! If you need help, David is your guy!
