Bio

I have been teaching English professionally for the past ten years - eight in South Korea and two online independently. I believe that students learn best when they are engaged in something they truly love, so my focus is on finding each student's passions and interests and using those to customize a lesson to be as effective as possible.

I have been teaching English professionally for the past ten years - eight in South Korea and two online independently. I believe that students learn best when they are engaged in something they truly love, so my focus is on finding each student's passions and interests and using those to customize a lesson to be as effective as possible.

I have taught students (both in classes and privately) from ages 4-65, all the way from beginning level ESL students (zero-level English) through university-level readers and writers. I am experienced in teaching everything from low-level phonics, reading, and conversation classes up through advanced grammar, history/politics, and colloquial vs. formal speaking and writing.

As a language learner myself (I also speak Korean and German), I can personally relate to the difficulties of language learning. After 8 years teaching EFL learners, I know many of the specific difficulties of learning English and have lessons ready to address them. I have dedicated myself to learning as much as possible about language learning, and I hope to help you by sharing that knowledge with you.

Whether we meet face-to-face or online, I want to help you learn in the best way for YOU! Please contact me and set up a free trial lesson so we can assess your needs and make a learning plan together.

Talk to you soon!
Megan H.

Public Speaking

As a professional public speaking teacher and public speaking curriculum developer with 10 years of experience, I have worked extensively with students preparing for public speaking events as well as teaching general skill-building speech classes. Before becoming an educator, I was, myself, quite nervous about public speaking, so I can relate to students who have difficulty presenting. After overcoming that fear myself, I have plentiful tips and tricks to offer to help improve performance as well as confidence. From speaking skills like voice projection, gesturing, tone, and body language to speech-writing skills like organization, flow, word choice, and visual aids, I am happy to help students prepare for any specific upcoming speaking engagements they may have, build presentation skills generally, or simply help build up confidence in their daily conversations.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

Having worked as a professional, TESOL-certified English teacher for the past 10 years, I have plenty of experience with all levels and ages of EFL/ESL learners. I am most passionate about teaching English grammar, pronunciation, and writing, but also specialize in TOEFL and IELTS prep, conversational English, and public speaking. By simplifying rules to make them more understandable and teaching real-world application techniques, I hope to make English more accessible as a second language!
Grammar,

Grammar

English grammar is an enigma. From the lowest level grammar ideas (like basic parts of speech and subject-verb agreement) to the highest level (subjunctives, phrasal verbs, and parallelism), I have plenty of tips and tricks to offer students to help simplify and clarify these ideas. Because I have been a grammar teacher for 10 years and speak 3 languages myself, I know what issues students from different native languages commonly encounter, why the rules can be confusing, and how to explain things more simply for all levels.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

As a professional English teacher for the last nine years, I have done extensive editing, proofreading, and marking of English texts (from levels A1-C1 on the CEFR) both for native speaking and ESL students as well as institutions. I am proud to have helped a wide array of students achieve the grades they have sought, get into the universities they applied to, and publish their final degree theses. In editing any text, my goal is always two-fold: 1) edit a text to become the best possible version of itself and 2) teach the writer something about how they can better self-edit in the future.

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been professionally teaching elementary and middle school students in high-achieving South Korean magnet schools and online for the last 10 years. I have specialized in teaching language arts (phonics, grammar, writing, and vocabulary) as well as social studies and history. Additionally, I have been a curriculum developer for students ages 3-16 for the last 5 years, so I have a strong understanding of what types of content and material are appropriate for certain ages and levels of learners. I pride myself on my fun, high-energy teaching style, which proves effective with students of all ages!

Phonics

I have been teaching EFL phonics for the last 10 years - eight in South Korean magnet schools and two online independently. I have experience teaching the alphabet, short vowels, long vowels, digraphs (both consonant blends and vowel blends), silent letters, irregular spelling rules, and more. I know how to both teach these ideas as well as assess a student's ability to remember and apply the rules in the real world. I pride myself on motivating my students to love learning phonics by integrating a wide variety of internet-based sources (including videos, games, and self-assessments).
Reading,

Reading

For the past decade, I've been professionally teaching language arts to a wide array of students in terms of age and ability. With a vast variety of sources and methods for teaching reading comprehension and analysis, I like to help students craft their own learning plan by taking of advantage of their strengths and interests to build up skill in areas that may be lacking. Depending on student interest and level, we have many options in terms of how actively or passively we learn, what types of texts we focus on, and how we apply the reading skills learned.
Spelling,

Spelling

With ten years of experience (eight in South Korean magnet schools and two online independently), I have helped hundreds and hundreds of students improve their spelling. From the youngest learners encountering the alphabet for the first time to more advanced students working on diphthongs, digraphs, and Latin and Greek roots, I am happy to help students build skills and confidence in their spelling in order to build a strong foundation for subsequent writing skills.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Having worked for two years online and eight years with South Korean students (who are heavily pressured to focus solely on their academic success from a very young age), I have had a lot of experience working to make studying as enjoyable, organized, and efficient as possible. In order to build healthy study skills that are viable for the long term, I try to focus on figuring out each student's preferred method of self-motivation, exploring different systems of organization until we find one that works for that specific individual, and building a positive attitude and outlook toward school and learning in general.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Having taught a wide range of ages and levels over the past ten years (eight at South Korean magnet schools and two online independently), I have a great deal of experience with helping students improve their vocabulary as well as teaching them the techniques necessary in order to help them improve their OWN vocabulary. From learning sight words to Latin and Greek roots to specialized vocabulary for a particular area of study, I hope to help students meet their specific short-term goals as well as build the skills necessary to become their own best vocabulary teacher.

Having taught English professionally for the past 10 years, I have plenty of experience with all levels and ages. I specialize in writing, grammar, and reading comprehension, often incorporating them together to build deeper, cross-curricular knowledge. The IELTS and the TOEFL are tricky tests. For most people, they also have high stakes surrounding them. Thus, for my students preparing for both the IELTS and the TOEFL, I offer a wide variety of resources for both general skill-building and specific test practice, a large amount of honest feedback and scoring on responses, and the best heuristics (or rules of thumb) to help you get your ideal score. The best test-takers are those who are mentally prepared, so we make sure to discuss all aspects of test so nothing comes as a surprise on test day.
Literature,

Literature

As a longtime professional English teacher (eight years with South Korean magnet schools and two years online independently), I have helped a variety of students at wide-ranging levels improve their literature and language arts skills. From kindergarten through university, my goal is to help students identify their own strengths and weaknesses, learn heuristics to help improve overall performance related to both passive comprehension and active response-creation, and build confidence overall. Whether a student needs help on day-to-day tasks, preparing for a test, or simply wants to get ahead of the curve, we apply these principles in order to facilitate each student's self-assessment and self-teaching skills.

Having taught English professionally for nearly a decade (nine years at South Korean magnet schools and one year online independently), I have built a strong understanding of the process and development of writing skills. I am passionate about helping students become the best writers possible through continually improving fluency in the 7 write traits: ideas, sentence fluency, organization, voice, word choice, conventions, and presentation. Across ages and levels, these features of writing provide a strong framework for self-assessment, analysis, and developing goals.

Awesome

She is a really energetic and patient teacher and tries to give valuable lessons to students. I strongly recommend students to take her lessons. In addition, she always gives good tips to non native English speakers. Once again I strongly recommend.

Very Patient Tutor

This was my first time on Wyzant and I landed a great tutor. Megan was very patient and helped me proofread my assignment on her day off. I am truly grateful and would like to have her as a tutor again.

Excellent Skills & Fast Turn-Around Time

Megan quickly responded to my messages and has been one of the most professional tutors I have engaged with on the app. She was excellent at editing my essays for doctoral applications, while still keeping my voice. She was also extremely helpful in editing my research paper and correcting citations. This process has been tough, but Megan's assistance was very helpful. I also appreciate her pleasant disposition. I would highly recommend Megan!!!!

Megan is very knowledgable, and has a gift for breaking grammar down so it is easier to understand

We spent our time learning rules of grammar. She was very patient while we were working to get my computer to link to your site. Great first lesson! My wife wants to sit in on the next lesson.

Excellent ESL tutor, organized and fun!

I'm taking Accent Reduction lessons with Megan. My accent has been bothering me. Though I have tried to self-correct, it didn't work out as I expected. Megan has helped me reduce my accent in a way that I couldn't learn from either a book or other ESL classes. She has good ears and always listens attentively. When we talk, without interrupting me she makes notes on what I can improve and then tells me afterwards. During our online lessons, she moves her camera as much as needed to show me more clearly how she pronounces the words. I benefit tremendously from Megan's unique teaching style. She has abundant materials that meet my level. She is also fun to converse with and has empathy with ESL students, which I'm grateful for. Her voice always cheers me up and therefore builds up my confidence in speaking. Another wonderful thing with Megan is that students need not to worry about how to save the screen from online lessons, because Megan does it for you and sends the complete notes to you shortly after each lesson. Overall, I'm glad that I made the investment. The time spent with Megan is worth every penny.
